He lowered his head, avoiding my gaze, but still could not stop 

himself from defending himself. 

“Claire, Laurel did that. It had nothing to do with me.” 

“Besides, I called the ambulance for you in the end, didn’t I?” 

His words only made the chill in my heart deepen. 

I could never forget the way he had shattered my dignity in 

front of everyone and forced me to apologize to Laurel as if 

granting me mercy. 

“So I should thank you?” 

He shook his head quickly. 

“Claire, that’s not what I meant. I’m just saying your 

mother’s death can’t be blamed on me.” 

“I never wanted this to happen. If I had known it would end 

like this, I would have sent you and your mother to the 

hospital right away.” 

After quietly listening to his after–the–fact excuses, I laughed. 

“Ethan Bennett, too bad there are no ifs in this world.” 

“My mother’s life stands between us. If you had any sense at all, you would never have shown up in front of me.” 

Four hundred and thirty–seven days. 

Every night after I closed my eyes, the scene of my mother’s death played in my mind and tortured me until I could barely 

breathe. 

I hated Ethan. There was no doubt about that. 

But I hated myself even more. 

I hated myself for being blind, for failing to see his true nature 

after eight whole years. 

I hated myself for being softhearted, for bringing a wolf into 

my home and falling for Laurel’s fragile act. 

My words seemed to cut into Ethan, and his eyes filled with 

regret. 

“Claire, can we talk? Please?” 

Not wanting to be stared at by passersby, we went to a café 

down the street. 

He ordered two salted caramel crunch lattes and pushed one 

toward me. 

“I remember this was your favorite.” 

I turned the menu around and ordered a unsweetened black 

coffee. 

“I quit that a long time ago.” 

His hand paused for a moment, but he quickly pretended 

nothing had happened and went on. 

“Claire, I’ve always wanted to apologize to you in person for what happened that day, but I never had the chance.” 

“The truth is, the person I wanted to marry was always you. I only brought Laurel to the wedding because I was angry and 

wanted to spite you.” 

I could not stop myself from throwing my coffee in his face, 

my eyes red with fury. 

“But Ethan Bennett, your little act of spite cost my mother her 

life” 

He took out a handkerchief and wiped his face, murmuring 

under his breath. 

“Claire, I didn’t know it would happen. I really didn’t. Please 

believe me.” 

“Actually, I regretted it the moment I walked out. I kept waiting for you to call me and ask me to come back. When I got your message at the wedding, I was genuinely happy. I just never expected it to be such devastating news.” 

“Even without that message, I would have stopped the wedding.” 

His pathetic performance disgusted me. 

I could not help sneering. 

“You already legally married her. Did it matter whether you 

held the wedding or not?” 

He shook his head quickly and pulled out the final divorce decree, placing it in front of me. 

“I divorced her a long time ago.” 

Then he carefully took an elegantly wrapped jewelry box from 

his bag and set it down in front of me. 

“Claire, these are the wedding rings we designed together. Do you remember?” 

When I did not react, he pressed his lips together and opened 

the box himself. 

A pair of uniquely designed diamond rings appeared before my 

eyes.
