The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 07

I knew my mother meant well. 

She knew how much I loved Lucas, and she was convinced I 

was just throwing a tantrum–that I’d never actually leave 

him. 

But I wasn’t her. 

I couldn’t just have my heart broken and then magnanimously forgive the man who betrayed me. 

I wasn’t some old–fashioned woman who couldn’t live 

without a man. 

So I told her, word by word, “Mom, it’s over between us. He 

can marry whoever he wants.” 

On the other end of the line, my mother slapped her thigh in 

frustration. 

“Oh, my silly daughter, why can’t you see reason? Men make 

mistakes. What matters is that he’s willing to correct them 

and come back. That means he still loves you.” 

“Do you really want to let someone else enjoy what you 

worked so hard to build?” 

She kept at it until she was almost hoarse, but I didn’t budge. 

“Mom, I have things to do. I have to go.” 

I understood that she was struggling to accept losing such a 

rich son–in–law. 

But once I proved I could make my own money, she’d stop 

obsessing over tying my future to a man. 

Then she sent me a link. 

I clicked it. It was a video of the wedding that day. 

It started right at the moment Mrs. Sterling exposed the truth. 

“Bullshit! She’s been missing a uterus since she was a child. How the hell is she pregnant?” 

Lucas stared at his mother in disbelief, his lips trembling. “Mom, is that true?” 

Mrs. Sterling rolled her eyes and started laying into Celeste. 

She had none of the refined dignity I’d always known her to have. One hand on her hip, she pointed at Celeste’s nose and 

shouted. 

“Just like mother, like daughter. That old slut taught the young slut well. You both only know how to seduce my son.” 

“Back when we were neighbors, my husband felt sorry for you 

and your mother–a couple of poor orphans. He even gave you rides to work and school. And how did your mother repay him? 

She tried to climb into his bed.” 

“If Richard hadn’t been faithful, that bitch would have 

succeeded after drugging him.” 

“To protect your reputations, Richard and I kept that secret 

buried. We thought it was over when you moved away.” 

“But no.” 

“You little homewrecker, you came back and seduced my son, 

ruined his wedding, and drove away his fiancée.” 

“You and your mother are so desperate for other women’s men. Aren’t you afraid of karma?” 

“Are there no other men left in the world? Do you have to fight 

over mine?” 

“You got into that car accident when you were little. You 

almost bled to death, and I was the one who gave you a transfusion. I saved your life. And this is how you repay me?” 

“You could have lied about anything. But you said you were carrying my son’s baby. Did you think I was dead?” 

Celeste’s face was pale as she denied everything. 

“I did not. You’re the liar.” 

“I was pregnant. And Vera pushed me and made me lose the 

baby. And my―” 

“You were going to say you lost your uterus from the miscarriage, weren’t you?” 

Mrs. Sterling cut her off, leaving her speechless. 

Celeste bit her lower lip hard and looked at Lucas with tearful 

eyes. 

“Lucas, I know your mother has never liked me. But I honestly don’t know anything about what she’s saying.” 

She was sure Lucas wouldn’t know either. 

But Mrs. Sterling wasn’t about to let her off the hook. She 

grabbed Celeste’s arm and tried to pull her out of the room. 

“Whether you lost your uterus just now or a long time ago, 

we’ll find out at the hospital.”
