The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 04

After that, nothing he said or did could surprise me anymore.

Since I was leaving anyway, I’d do him one last favor.

“Fine.”

Maybe because I was being so obedient, Lucas finally stopped being blind.

He finally noticed the shattered wedding portrait on the floor.

And the blood on my foot.

His eyes turned red with panic. He ran back inside to get the first aid kit.

While he was gone, Celeste lifted her chin and taunted me: “Vera, you are so pathetic. You know I’m already Lucas’s wife, and you still want to go through with the wedding tomorrow.”

“Even if his mother doesn’t like me, so what? She can only watch helplessly as Lucas marries me.”

“Tomorrow’s wedding will be mine. And Lucas will be my man.”

“And you? You’ll be nothing but a homewrecker—everyone will despise you.”

“Don’t dream that he’ll divorce me in three years and marry you. Because…”

She touched her stomach, grinning smugly.

“The baby I’m carrying is his.”

I lowered my eyes to hide the sudden rush of tears.

So Lucas had betrayed me after all.

And he’d treated me like a fool, asking me to wait three more years.

I did the math. The baby was conceived on the night Lucas didn’t come home.

That was the first time he’d forgotten my birthday. He said he had to work late.

The next day, he came back full of apologies.

And he proposed.

He said he wanted to give me the wedding of my dreams.

I’d waited eight years for that day.

Joy pushed away all the unhappiness I’d been feeling.

But that night, he forgot to lock the bathroom door. When I went in, I saw fresh scratch marks on his back.

I demanded an explanation.

He calmly said he’d been scratched by a cat.

He even showed me his rabies vaccination record.

I had no choice but to believe him.

But a woman’s intuition told me that even as we planned our wedding, none of it felt real.

And a voice inside me whispered that the only reason he’d finally agreed to marry me was as compensation for something terrible he’d done.

I buried my head in the sand like an ostrich, too afraid to face the truth.

But my own resentment made me start secretly following him.

When I caught him going to Celeste’s house multiple times, claiming he was meeting clients, I started waiting for him to confess.

So when he didn’t show up to the rehearsal, I didn’t call to ask why.

And when he texted me saying he was going to get a marriage certificate with Celeste, I didn’t argue.

“Excuse me.”

I had no interest in talking to Celeste. I just wanted to leave.

But just as Lucas came running out with the first aid kit, she grabbed my hand and fell backward onto the pile of broken glass.

“Vera, I know you don’t like me, but why did you push me?”

“Oh, my stomach. It hurts so much.”

Celeste held up her hand. A shard of glass had cut her palm.

Lucas rushed over, his face full of worry and tenderness.

“Celeste, don’t be scared. I’m taking you to the hospital.”

He lifted her carefully and carried her out.

Before he left, he gave me a cold look and said flatly: “Vera, I didn’t think you were this cruel. How could you lay hands on a pregnant woman?”

“If anything happens to that baby, there’s no future for us.”

I watched his retreating back and whispered: “There was never a future for us.”

I cleaned up the broken glass. The cut on my foot had already stopped bleeding on its own.

But the wound on my heart was still raw.
