When he wasn’t digging up information on Selene, Zephyr stayed in the cave he once called home. 

It was in a run–down part of the Mooncrest Pack territory, where he had been abandoned. It wasn’t a good cave. 

Sometimes when it rained, the whole place would get damp. 

But even so, he liked being there, because it still smelled like 

Nova. 

It was the only thing that could soothe his restless heart. 

He looked at the sparse furnishings. The place felt both familiar and strange. 

Familiar, because Nova had made it warm. Strange, because 

back then he had been blind. 

The only way he knew anything was through Nova’s patient 

guidance. 

She had been his light in the darkness. 

His feelings for her went beyond romance, they were rooted in 

her very essence. 

She taught him how to navigate the space so he wouldn’t fall. 

She arranged things according to his habits so he could reach 

them easily. 

He couldn’t see her love, but he could feel it. Real and true. 

Memories flooded Zephyr’s mind like the tide. 

Tears streamed silently down his face. 

His beta called with news: Nova had been located. She was in 

Valoria. 

Zephyr’s nerves went on high alert. 

He had been frantic, not knowing where she was. But now, knowing her location, he was terrified she wouldn’t forgive 

him. 

He hadn’t recognized her. He had done unforgivable things. Anyone would have been disappointed. 

“Book me the earliest flight. I’m leaving immediately.” 

“Sir, with your current state, a long flight isn’t advisable…” The beta hesitated, looking at Zephyr. 

But Zephyr ignored him completely. 

He stood up, straightened his clothes, and prepared to depart. 

The beta dared not say another word. He just went to get the 

car. 

They drove straight to the airport. 

The plane streaked across the sky, leaving behind a trail of mottled white vapor on the blue canvas. 

It mirrored Zephyr’s heart, a mix of anticipation and dread. 

A light rain started to fall in Valoria. 

Kaelen and I had planned to go out for dinner, but we had to 

change our plans. 

He must have noticed my frustration, because he spoke up.“You can cook, right? Since going out is a hassle, why don’t we eat in? How does cheese fondue sound?” 

He added, “A friend of mine just brought some specialities from his hometown. We could try those too.” 

I was sold immediately. 

“I was just thinking the other day that the food here isn’t very authentic. You’re a lifesaver.” 

I smiled. “I’ll make roast beef short ribs, then.” 

“Okay. I’ll do the dishes.” 

We decided quickly. 

We walked to the supermarket together, sharing an umbrella. 

The rain wasn’t heavy, but the streets were flooded. 

A jeep drove by, and a wave of water suddenly splashed 

towards us. 

Before I could react, Kaelen pulled me aside, shielding me with his body. “Careful.” 

In that instant, we were so close. Close enough to feel his breath and the faint, woody scent of his cologne. 

I looked up and met his gaze. 

His lashes were long, casting a faint shadow over his eyes when he lowered them slightly. 

I froze. 

He froze too. 

His ears slowly turned red, but he didn’t let go. 

The air grew quiet. It felt like a moment that shouldn’t be 

interrupted. 

“Nova…” he said softly. 

I snapped back to reality and quickly stepped back. “The 

supermarket is close. Let’s go before the rain gets worse.” 

I tried to keep my voice normal. 

He nodded. 

He didn’t say anything else, just tilted the umbrella a little 

more towards my side. 

He didn’t look at me the rest of the way. 

But I knew. 

He didn’t slow down. And he didn’t move further away. 

He just walked quietly beside me. 

For a moment, I had the faint feeling that… he was glad the 

umbrella had been broken earlier.
