His Love Letter Was Meant For Someone Else Chapter 02

When I got home, I sat at my desk to look up study materials on my phone.

My phone’s notification pinged over and over, interrupting my train of thought. I opened the messages irritably.

They were all from Elijah, dozens of unread texts.

[Why didn’t you wait for me after school? Aren’t we studying together today?]

[No, I have too much work to do, I don’t have time.]

I replied half-heartedly. I quickly removed Elijah from my “favorite contacts” list and turned on do-not-disturb.

Elijah didn’t text again. I flipped my phone face-down on the desk, too tired to care what he was thinking.

In my past life, Elijah and I were childhood sweethearts. We’d gone to the same school and same class growing up.

We had the same teachers, but my score was almost 1560, while Elijah’s was less than 400.

“Who cares, I don’t care about school anyway,” he’d always say.

This laid-back guy suddenly started pulling all-nighters before the SAT, and promised me seriously. “Elena, teach me, okay? I want to go to the same college as you.”

I’d had a crush on Elijah for three years, so of course I was shocked and thrilled. I offered to tutor him, stayed up late organizing study notes just for him.

But in the end, that thick stack of notes ended up on Janet’s desk.

I was furious, my mind was a total mess, I couldn’t even focus on the monthly exam.

When the scores came out, I—who’d always been first place—tasted defeat for the first time.

I cried from hurt and humiliation. Elijah stood in front of the exam ranking board, patted my head, and coaxed me patiently, “Come on, Janet’s family can’t afford to buy study materials. You’re such a kind person, Elena, can’t you just do this as a favor for her?”

Only later did I find out that someone had been calling Janet “eternal runner-up” behind her back, and she’d cried for hours because of it.

So Elijah had approached me for no other reason than to pull me down from first place, to get even for the girl he liked.

I took a deep breath, forced down the roiling anger in my chest, and started reviewing.

I’d let my knowledge get rusty after putting it aside for so long in my past life.

I ended up studying until late at night without noticing, and slept in the next morning.

I rushed out of the house in a panic, and just turned the corner into the alley I saw Elijah’s bike parked there.

“Elena, get on, I’ll give you a ride!”

I glanced at my watch, gritted my teeth, and climbed onto the back seat.

“Are you still mad at me?”

The bread he had tucked in his jacket was still warm. Elijah pulled it out and silently stuffed it into my hand.

This bread was only sold on the north side of town. I looked up at Elijah’s damp hair, and a tiny flicker of softness stirred in my heart.

After a pause, I softened my voice. “No, I’m not.”

The bike suddenly braked hard. I wasn’t ready, and my nose crashed hard into Elijah’s back.

My nose stung sharply, and warm liquid flowed down my face right away.

“Janet twisted her ankle, I need to take her to the nurse’s office. You’re almost at school now, can you walk the rest of the way?”

Elijah turned around anxiously, urging me to get off. When his eyes caught the blood on my face, a flash of shock crossed his face.

He pressed his lips tight, hardened his heart, and pushed me off the bike.

I watched Elijah carefully help Janet onto the bike, and he didn’t even glance at me once after that.

I laughed at my own stupidity, and threw the bread right into the trash can.

By the time I ran to the classroom, I was already late. The teacher punished me by making me stand at the back of the room for the whole period.

When the bell rang for class to end, Janet walked over to me guilty, and stuffed a carton of milk into my hand before I could say anything.

“I’m so sorry, Elena. If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t have been late…”
