You don’t keep dogs just to look at them. You use them.

That night, I had Lucian and Sebastian bathed and changed.

They both knew what that meant.

But they were bathed separately.

Only Lucian knew Sebastian had been prepared too.

I gave him a choice.

Say no, and the spot went to Sebastian.

Say yes, and he’d be the only one that night.

Lucian knew Sebastian would say no. But he also knew I’d make him say yes.

Just like the storage room. Just like everything else.

He was led into the bedroom.

He looked at himself in the mirror. He barely recognized the man staring back.

I walked in. He was still staring at nothing.

He flinched back to reality, his whole body trembling. He couldn’t tell if it was fear or want.

If he took this step, there was no going back.

If Charles ever came home, Lucian would have to worry about being tossed aside like all the others.

He wasn’t Charles. He didn’t have the history. He couldn’t compete.

The only reason he’d said no before was because he was afraid of being the one left behind.

He knew Charles was only missing. Not dead.

I looked at him and rolled my eyes. It wasn’t like I was desperate.

“Scared? I’m not a monster. If you can’t do it, just say so.”

Nothing ruins a night like a man who acts like he’s walking to the gallows.

I turned to leave. Go find Sebastian.

Even if nothing happened, at least he was entertaining.

Stubborn, loud–mouthed men always made me want to break them.
