76 Missed Calls, And He Still Chose Her Dog Chapter 04

76 Missed Calls, And He Still Chose Her Dog Chapter 04

When I carried the ruined sweater home, the rain had soaked me through.

I was shaking from the cold.

The rainwater had diluted the stains in the fabric.

The sweater no longer looked like itself.

It looked like a dirty rag someone had thrown away.

It should have carried my mother’s warmth for me.

I sat in the living room all night.

Near dawn, I tore up the divorce agreement I had originally planned to keep civil.

Adrian was right.

A reporter’s job was to put the truth in front of everyone.

How could I let him down?

Late that night, a cool sensation touched my cheek.

I opened my eyes.

Adrian was sitting by the bed with arnica salve in his hand.

He looked at me with guilt in his eyes.

“Lydia, does it still hurt?”

“I’m sorry. I lost control today.”

“But you shouldn’t have said those things about Madison in front of customers.”

“She’s unmarried, and she runs a public business.”

“That could ruin her reputation.”

I pushed his hand away.

“So?”

Adrian pressed his lips together.

“So can you apologize to her publicly?”

“Say your pregnancy hormones made you emotional, and what you said was a misunderstanding.”

“The day after tomorrow is the second anniversary of Madison’s pet boutique.”

“You know a lot of bloggers and media people.”

“Help promote her store for free while you’re at it.”

In that instant, the smell of the ointment disgusted me more than the litter box.

“Adrian Whitlock, I’m only asking once.”

“Are you sure?”

He lowered his eyes and didn’t dare look at me.

But his tone was firm.

“Madison cried really hard.”

“Consider it compensation.”

“And for our baby’s sake, stop making this bigger.”

“If you agree, I promise I’ll go with you to every OB appointment from now on.”‘

“I’ll treat you twice as well.”

I looked at him quietly.

The face that had once made my heart race now looked terrifyingly unfamiliar.

After a long time, I smiled.

“Fine.”

Joy flashed in Adrian’s eyes.

He reached out to hug me.

But messages kept popping up on his phone.

I didn’t need to guess who they were from.

Sure enough, he ran to Madison again.

But this time, I didn’t feel sad anymore.

A few minutes later, Madison called me.

“Lydia, don’t you think you’re pathetic?”

“You’re carrying a child, but you still won’t behave. You had to play the victim and call Adrian

home.”

“And then what?”

“One message from me, and he still came running.”

“If not for that child in your stomach, he would’ve dumped you already.”

If this were before, I would have hung up.

But this time, I touched my empty stomach and laughed softly.

“That’s right.”

“You know I’m carrying his child.”

“Adrian’s parents value family, and he cares about appearances.”

“If I’m not mistaken, you two have always used protection, right?”

The other end of the line went silent.

Her silence confirmed my guess.

“Then you should know.”

“As long as this child exists, he’ll never divorce me for you.”

“Men are like that. They can have all the fun they want outside, but in the end, they still go home.”

“Oh, and he just told me that once the child is born, he’ll transfer all his assets to the child.”

“When that happens, you’ll get nothing.”

“As for you, you’re just someone my husband uses to pass the time when pregnancy makes things

inconvenient for me.”

“I should be thanking you.”

Madison’s furious breathing came through the phone.

“Don’t get smug.”

“I’ll make Adrian divorce you.”

She truly didn’t disappoint me.

Half an hour later, she sent me a private video of herself and Adrian.

There was also a voice message.

“Lydia, what are you so proud of?”

“I shed a few tears, and Adrian was willing to get serious with me.”

“So today, we didn’t use protection.”

“When I have his child, you and that thing in your stomach can wait to be thrown out.”

I didn’t reply.

Wasting even one more word on someone that stupid would have been charity, and I was done being

charitable.
