519 Invitations Had Her Name, I Cancelled The Wedding Chapter 02

Nathan’s fingers tightened sharply.

Outside the door, Madison knocked.

“Nathan, your parents are asking if we’re still sending the invitations.”

“And should my parents still expect theirs?”

Nathan didn’t answer.

Madison pushed the door open and leaned halfway in.

She was still holding the invitation with her name on it, tapping her finger on the bride’s line.

“Evelyn, don’t be so rigid.”

“Everyone’s been planning for half a year. You canceling like this hurts people.”

I looked at her.

“When you wrote the wrong name, were you afraid of hurting me?”

Madison shrugged.

“I said I’d pay for it, didn’t I?”

“It’s just 520 pieces of paper. Send me the bill.”

Then, as if just remembering something, she smiled.

“Though this paper isn’t that expensive, right? Cotton rag paper. It’s not like it’s a real antique.”

I stared at her.

“That was the paper my father used.”

Madison paused for a second, then smiled again.

“No wonder it looks so old-fashioned.”

Nathan’s voice was low.

“Madison, get out.”

Madison stuck out her tongue.

“Fine. I won’t interrupt your marital discussion.”

At the door, she turned back.

“But Evelyn, I’d advise you not to threaten him with divorce.”

“Nathan hates being pressured. In college, his ex-girlfriend tried to make him choose between us, and he moved into my rental apartment for a month that same day.”

Nathan’s face turned ugly.

“Are you done?”

She backed out, laughing.

The study was left with just the two of us.

Nathan let go of me, his tone softer than before.

“She has no filter. I’ll make her apologize to you.”

I asked him, “Why can’t I?”

“What people think of my parents, our business partners, both families. You’re just going to ignore all of them?”

So everyone else’s dignity mattered.

Only mine didn’t matter.

He picked up the invitation on the desk and opened it to the inner page.

There, printed in my father’s words, was the line: [To my daughter on her wedding day, may she always have a home.]

Nathan softened his voice.

“If your father were still here, he wouldn’t want you to back out now.”

Something clenched hard in my chest.

Before my father died, his biggest worry had been me.

In that hospital room, he had held Nathan’s hand and said, “Evelyn is quiet. When she’s hurt, she doesn’t fight. Please protect her.”

Nathan had promised through tears.

Now he was using my father to convince me to endure.

Suddenly, laughter came from outside the door.

I opened it.

Madison was sitting on the rug, video chatting with several groomsmen.

She held the invitation with her name on it against her chest.

“See? I’m only 519 invitations away from marrying Nathan.”

People on the screen egged her on.

“If the bride runs, you can just take her place!”

“Madison waited twenty years. She finally got her chance.”

Madison laughed until she doubled over.

I walked over and shut off her phone.

Madison’s expression changed.

“What are you doing?”

I picked up the invitations and tore them, one by one.

Paper fell everywhere.

Madison screamed.

“Are you insane?”

Nathan rushed out of the study.

“Evelyn Harper!”

By the time I tore the last one, my fingers had gone numb.

“I’m not sending these invitations.”

Deborah was shaking with anger.

“You are being completely unreasonable!”

Madison looked at Nathan with tears in her eyes.

“I’m sorry. I really didn’t know she’d take it this hard.”

Nathan looked at her, then at the scattered paper.

Finally, he spoke to me in a cold voice.

“Go back to the old house tonight and cool off.”

“The wedding will proceed as planned.”

I lifted my head.

“The bride isn’t going. How exactly is the wedding supposed to proceed?”

He said, word by word, “You will go.”

“You can’t stand the thought of embarrassing me in front of everyone.”
