After I Died, the Alpha Went Mad Holding My Body Chapter 05

Kaelen had just walked out of the North Wing.

He saw me in the snow.

“Evelyn!”

The sound he made cracked over the whole Blackwood estate.

I was lying in a pool of my own blood. I used the last of what was in me to open my eyes.

I looked at each of their faces-all panicked, all useless-one by one.

Then I closed my eyes for good.

The second the system finished, my spirit lifted out of my body.

My mother stood frozen in place. Her coat was wet with my blood.

She turned to look at me, slow as ice cracking. Tears poured down before she could stop

them.

My father was frozen too. Like none of it was real.

Then Kaelen was on me. Hands clamped over the wound. Eyes blown wide.

“Where is the pack healer? Stop the bleeding!”

His hands shook from pressing so hard.

It didn’t matter. Life was leaving me. Nothing his hands could do.

The pack healer stumbled over. Tore out the best clotting powder he had. Threw it on the

wound in a panic.

“It’s bad-that dagger was silver!”

He saw my chest wasn’t rising anymore. The color drained out of his face.

He tried not to believe it. Felt for breath. Felt for pulse.

Then he dropped to his knees. His voice fell apart.

“Alpha. The Luna is gone.”

“Shut up!”

Kaelen kicked him across the snow.

“Who told you to say she’s gone? You say that again, I send your whole family out of this

pack. No coming back.”

He looked down at my closed eyes. Tried to hold himself together.

“Evelyn. Wake up.”

“I’m here. Open your eyes. Look at me.”

No matter how many times he said it, I wasn’t there to answer.

My mother stumbled forward. Shaking hand reaching for my mouth, feeling for breath.

When she felt nothing, her bones gave out. She crumpled into the snow.

“Dead… she’s really dead…”

My father stood there empty. The stern face I’d grown up under was bleached white.

From inside the North Wing, Isabella’s voice came drifting out.

“Alpha-I’m hurting so much. Come see me, please…”

Kaelen didn’t move. He held me. Kept saying my name.

My parents hadn’t come back to themselves yet, but their feet still carried them to her on

instinct.

“Isabella. Father and Mother are here. Don’t be scared.”

For a second-when she didn’t see Kaelen-her face twisted.

Then her eyes went wet again. She grabbed my mother’s hand.

“Mother-why isn’t the Alpha here? My stomach hurts so much.”

And then she dropped into my mother’s arms the way she always had. Spoiled. Coddled.

Watching my mother hold her, I laughed soundlessly.

Isabella and I both carried Silverclaw blood.

But Isabella was born when my parents were in love.

When I was born, my mother nearly died in the birthing room. And my father had taken up

with another woman around the same time-he stopped caring about my mother the way he

used to.

So all these years, my mother had carried a quiet conviction: that I had brought the unhappiness into her life.

Their love for Isabella was bone-deep.

I was the one who’d never quite belonged.
