The second I signed my name, dark clouds covered the sun that had been shining on them.

“I hope you don’t regret this.”

“Stop here!” Cedric shouted sharply. “Cut the weird act. Grandma believed you, but I don’t. This family’s better off without you!”

Celeste patted Cedric’s back softly and comforted him.

“Dad, don’t waste your anger on her. Her tricks only fooled old people like Grandma.”

They all knew.

Grandma Eleanor must have told Cedric in secret.

But he’d never believed her.

I didn’t bother talking to them anymore.

The second I signed that paper, I gave up the name Ashbourne.

From that day on, I didn’t belong to this family.

Every extra word was a waste of breath.

I heard laughter downstairs as I went to pack my things.

I never had much to begin with.

Even with Grandma’s old belongings, I didn’t fill a medium leather suitcase.

I carried it downstairs.

I couldn’t have done that before.

Once I gave up the Ashbourne name, I stopped bearing the omens for Blackthorn Pack and the Ashbourne family. In just a short time, color returned to my cheeks.

The whole family sat at the dining table, laughing and talking.

When they saw me, the laughter died. Every face twisted with disgust.

Lydia pointed at me and yelled. “What are you doing now? I told you to stay upstairs! Why are you down here?”

Carter glanced at me and my suitcase and scoffed.

“Oh, you’re not running away, are you?”

Celeste spoke sarcastically. “Please, would she dare? Where would she go without Blackthorn Pack?”

“Just a silly trick to get Mom and Dad’s attention.”

Cedric growled angrily. “Willow, get back inside and stop embarrassing me!”

I ignored them and walked straight for the door.

When I didn’t even turn my head, their faces turned uglier.

Cedric slammed his fist on the table and shouted. “How dare you ignore me! Can’t you hear me talking to you?”

That’s right.

From this moment on, he wasn’t my father.

He was just Cedric Ashbourne.

I kept walking without pausing.

Vanessa stepped forward first and grabbed my suitcase.

“Willow, did you steal from the family to sell outside?”

Celeste and Carter crowded around immediately.

“I knew it, she’s guilty.”

“Willow, you don’t own anything in this house!”

I felt nothing listening to them. My heart was calm.

I let go of the suitcase and huffed softly.

“Aren’t you the ones who steal?”

All three of them looked guilty for a split second.

Carter recovered first and pointed at me. “Lies! Stop making things up!”

I laughed coldly.

“Really? Five years ago, you snuck into Cedric and Lydia’s bedroom in the middle of the night and stole a watch. Three years ago, you took two moon bracelets from the back vault room.”

“You… you’re lying!”

He turned bright red and pointed at me.

I kept going. “Don’t rush. I’m not done. You snuck into Vanessa and Celeste’s rooms plenty of times when they weren’t home. You don’t need me to say exactly what you did.”

“I’m not lying. You can check the security cameras.”
