The Billionaire He Threw Away Chapter 01

The Billionaire He Threw Away Chapter 01

I came home from my night shift to find another woman wearing my robe, drinking coffee from my mug, sitting in my kitchen—and my husband watching her like she was the sunrise.

Liam didn’t even look at me when I walked in.

The woman did.

She smiled—slow, deliberate, venomous—and placed one hand on her belly.

“Oh, you must be Elise. Liam’s told me so much about you.” She tilted her head. “I’m Vanessa. I suppose he hasn’t told you much about me.”

I looked at Liam. He was leaning against the counter, arms crossed, jaw tight. Not with anger. With impatience. Like I was the intruder.

“Liam,” I said quietly. “What is this?”

He finally met my eyes. Cold. Distant. The same eyes that had once looked at me like I was the only person alive.

“Vanessa’s pregnant,” he said. “She’s moving in.”

My keys slipped from my fingers and hit the floor. The sound was small. The silence after it was enormous.

“She’s… what?”

“You heard me.” He pushed off the counter, standing tall. “It happened before us, Elise. She just found out. I’m not going to abandon my child.”

Before us. He said it like those words explained everything. Like the two years I had spent building a life with him—working double shifts to help pay his student loans, skipping meals so he could eat, holding him through every panic attack—meant nothing.

Vanessa sipped her coffee. My coffee. From my mug.

“I know this is hard,” she said sweetly, “but I’m sure you understand. A child needs its father.”

My throat burned. I looked at the apartment—our apartment. The curtains I’d sewn by hand. The bookshelf Liam and I had built together on a rainy Sunday. The framed photo on the wall of our wedding day, where he was smiling so wide it made my heart ache.

Vanessa had already moved the photo. It now sat face-down on the counter, replaced by a ultrasound image pinned to the wall with tape.

“Where am I supposed to sleep?” I asked.

Liam wouldn’t look at me. “The couch, for now. Just until we figure things out.”

The couch.

Two years of marriage, and I’d been demoted to the couch in my own home—for a woman I’d never heard of and a baby that may or may not be his.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to grab that ultrasound off the wall and tear it in half. I wanted to shake him until the man I married came back.

Instead, I picked up my keys from the floor.

“Elise—” Liam started.

“I need air,” I said.

I walked out before my voice could crack. Before they could see my hands shaking. Before the tears fell.

Outside, the cold hit me like a wall. December in New York. I had no coat—I’d left it inside, draped over the chair Vanessa was sitting in.

I sat on the front steps of our building and pressed my palms against my eyes.

That was when my phone buzzed.

An email. From a law firm I didn’t recognize.

**RE: Estate of Margaret Aldridge Wentworth — Inheritance Claim**

*Dear Ms. Elise Wentworth,*

*Following the passing of your grandmother, Margaret Aldridge Wentworth, you have been named sole heir to the Wentworth Estate, including controlling shares of Wentworth Industries (estimated value: $4.2 billion), the Wentworth Manor in Greenwich, and all associated holdings.*

*We have been attempting to reach you for three months. Please contact our office at your earliest convenience.*

*Regards,*

*Fletcher & Associates*

I read it three times.

Then I laughed—a broken, breathless, disbelieving sound that echoed down the empty street.

The grandmother who had disowned my mother twenty years ago. The family I was told wanted nothing to do with me. The name I had buried so deep I’d almost forgotten it was mine.

Four-point-two billion dollars.

And I was sitting on a freezing stoop, crying over a man who just gave my bed to another woman.
