Three years later, I found out she’d graduated with her PhD. 

I got on the first flight to England. I needed to see her, to say I 

was sorry. 

But she looked at me like I was a stranger–cold, distant. 

She really didn’t love me anymore. 

I couldn’t believe it. We’d loved each other for so many years. 

How could she just stop? 

So I moved in across from her. I tried to win her back, like I 

had before. 

If I begged long enough, her kind heart would soften. 

But she didn’t want anything to do with me. 

Then Kian showed up too. I didn’t care about him anymore. Looking back, my jealousy had been so stupid. 

Chloe invited both of us to talk. 

Eighteen years of feelings. She let go of me like I was nothing. 

I finally realized. Kian and I both lost. I’d loved her first. I’d been the one who had her. But I lost everything. 

Year after year, I flew back to England, just to see her from a 

distance. 

When I was thirty–five, I saw her sitting outside with a little baby girl in her arms. Sunlight fell on her face. The little girl looked just like her. 

A handsome, tall Chinese man walked over and handed her an 

ice cream. 

She smiled–still as beautiful as ever. 

But she wasn’t mine. Never mine again. 

I turned around and saw Kian standing behind me too. 

He was also watching them quietly. 

After a long time, the family disappeared down the street. Kian said quietly. “Chloe never should have met either of us.” 

He looked at me. 

“When you were jealous of me… did you ever think I’d be jealous of you?” 

“But neither of us held onto her tight enough.” 

I sighed softly. 

“Kian, we’re both monsters. Monsters don’t deserve love.” 

For the rest of my life, I only wished her safety, joy, and happiness. 

In a world without us.
