I started drinking heavily, staying away from home. I told 

everyone I was married, that I had a beautiful wife, that I’d 

loved her for over ten years before I finally had her. 

I stared at our old chat logs, laughing and crying. 

People said I’d lost my mind. 

I wasn’t crazy. I just missed her so much. 

Lila came to find me again. 

I ignored her. She wouldn’t give up. 

She cornered me at a bar. “Jaxon, what are you doing?” 

What was I doing? 

Drinking. Since Chloe left, nothing mattered. I couldn’t go home–too many memories, no her. 

Only alcohol could numb the pain. 

“Lila, get out. Now.” 

She hugged me. “She’s too old for you. She wasted your time. Why won’t you look at me?” 

“I’m young. And I love you. I’ve loved you for ten years with everything I have. I’m cleaner than she is.” 

Clean? 

I shoved her away hard, my eyes stinging. 

I hadn’t slept properly in weeks. All I dreamed about was Chloe. 

I thought hurting her would make me happy. It didn’t. It just 

hurt worse. 

From age twelve to twenty–eight–sixteen years. 

I’d lost her. 

I regretted it more than anything. 

I broke down crying, covering my face. 

Lila tried to come closer. I looked at her coldly. “If you don’t want to disappear from this city, leave.” 

“And the Reed family’s sponsorship? It ends today.” 

That night, I went back to our apartment again. I lay on the study floor, holding the wedding dress, curled into a ball.
