I never thought Lila Moore would come to find me. 

When I saw her, I finally remembered who she was. 

She was a girl the Reed family had sponsored.

And she’d secretly fallen in love with Jaxon. 

Who wouldn’t? A young girl meets a rich, handsome, 

out–of–reach man who saves her from hardship. 

“Ms. Carter, you loved someone else for ten years. I’ve loved 

Jaxon for ten years too. Please let him go.” 

She smiled sweetly, but I felt no warmth from her. 

“You’ve seen my posts, haven’t you?” 

She knew I’d looked at her account. 

She laughed again. “You know we kissed. We slept together. 

We understand each other–both the ones who loved quietly.” 

“Jaxon and I are better together, aren’t we?” 

A heavy weight pressed on my chest, making it hard to 

breathe. 

Her tone was sharp with provocation. “Women always pick the 

man who loves them more.” 

“Do you really think he believes you could stop loving 

someone after ten years and fall for him that easily? You’ve only been with him five years.” 

Jaxon told her everything. 

True. After I stopped chasing Kian, I was friends with Jaxon for 

two years before we dated for three. 

I lowered my eyes and smiled. 

“If you were so sure he’d choose you, you wouldn’t be here begging me to leave.” 

Lila’s face paled. She snapped back. “It’s only a matter of time. Just like you chose the man who loved you. Karma works. He’ll see me—the girl who loves him quietly.” 

“He sees himself in me. He’ll pity me. As long as he’s curious about me, I can win.” 

“You’d never understand, being the one who’s always loved.” 

My nails dug crescent marks into my palms. 

Thinking about Jaxon, my heart felt like it was being squeezed -sharp, unbearable pain. 

I swallowed the bitter taste in my throat and stood up, speaking slowly and clearly. 

“Calm down, little girl. The ones you can’t have are always the most tempting.” 

“You should hold onto that secret admirer title tightly.” 

“Because once you get what you want, the white moon 

becomes just a grain of rice, and the red rose becomes just a 

mosquito stain.”
