I didn’t hear from Jaxon, but I got a call from Kian Voss.

“Guess who I ran into in New York?”

“Kian, I don’t care. Stop calling me from different numbers.”

I was about to hang up when I heard the smug edge in his voice.

“Chloe, don’t you know why Jaxon disappeared? He doesn’t want to marry you. He’s still bitter you chased me.”

“He only got close to you to get back at me. He’s not the man you think he is.”

“What are you trying to say?” I was losing patience.

“Chloe, at least I never had anyone else… not after you loved me for ten years.”

I sat up, raising my voice.

“You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?”

“Five years later, you still love messing with me and him.”

“But let me tell you—this is my choice. I’ll take the risk and I won’t look back.”

Kian went quiet for a second, then said, off-topic. “

I sent you something. You’ll want to see it.”

After he hung up, I got a video.

Dim lighting. A girl stood face-to-face with Jaxon.

He blew out a ring of smoke, looking as careless as ever.

Amid cheers, the girl stood on her tiptoes and kissed him.

And he didn’t pull away.

The video cut off.

I opened the girl’s social media.

She’d already updated. “

Does this count as a win?”

Attached. a photo of them kissing.

I felt so sick I ran to the bathroom and threw up, my stomach cramping.

I hadn’t eaten all day.

There was nothing to bring up.

Pain twisted in my stomach, and I curled up on the bed.

I suddenly remembered the early days of our relationship.

I’d wanted to see the stars on the mountain in the middle of the night.

Jaxon didn’t ask questions.

He just indulged me, driving me all the way there.

It was cool at night.

He held me gently, his warmth seeping into me.

I drifted into a fitful sleep.

I was sweating cold, too weak to move.

I woke up in the hospital at seven in the morning.

He stood up to pour me water. “

You ruin your health when I’m not around? Your stomach’s always been weak. Are you trying to kill yourself?”

He scolded me.

I’d spent the week he was gone not eating, not sleeping, losing five pounds.

I’d convinced myself he’d been kidnapped, that he’d gotten into trouble with business rivals.

I’d been terrified, crying myself to sleep every night.

But he’d been out having fun, kissing another girl without a care.

“Not talking?” Jaxon smiled, pinching my cheek. “

You know I’ll punish you, right?”

“Come on. Eat something. Your husband made you congee. Didn’t sleep at all.”

He acted like nothing had happened, helping me sit up and feeding me spoonful by spoonful.

Several times, I almost asked him.

“Jaxon, are you tired of acting?

Or I heard you. If you don’t want to marry me, we can call it off right now. We’re not even legally married.”

But I swallowed the words.

I wanted to know—how could someone I loved for years hurt me like this?

Did me loving someone once mean I didn’t deserve real love?

“Baby, why are you crying?”

He set the bowl down, panicking as he wiped my tears.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, okay?”

I lowered my eyes, slowly closing them.

Then he pulled me into his arms.

“I’m just a little too excited. I can’t believe it for a moment when I know that I’m going to marry you. I’m afraid it’s a dream, so I want to make myself sober.
