My Husband Gave Me His Mistress’s Face and Sent Me to Prison for Her Chapter 01

As I was strapped to the operating table, I heard my husband, Adrian Moretti, comforting Isabella Russo outside the door.

“Isabella, don’t be scared. I’ll operate myself and make Elena’s face look like yours.”

“Once the FBI takes her away, the Brooklyn docks hit-and-run will have nothing to do with you anymore.”

Isabella stopped crying at once and broke into a smile.

“Adrian, you’re the only one who treats me well.”

“But won’t Elena be mad? She’s your wife.”

Adrian fell silent for a few seconds.

Then he sighed.

“Your brother took a bullet for me. You’re his only sister. Protecting you is the least I can do.”

“And Elena is my wife. She’ll understand.”

“When this is over, I’ll compensate her properly.”

Before I could even struggle, the anesthetic spread through my veins.

Before darkness swallowed me, all I saw was the surgical light above me.

Cold, white, and blinding, it looked like a knife hanging over my head.

When I woke up, thick gauze covered my whole face.

To stop me from destroying the face that was never mine, Adrian brought up our son.

Noah.

“Elena, please, just this once. Think of Noah.”

“As long as you take the fall for Isabella, the family won’t come under federal scrutiny, and Noah can grow up safe.”

I stopped fighting.

So my husband, the feared head of the Moretti family, personally sent me to federal prison.

Five years later, I was released.

When I got out of prison, I saw my husband. He was there to pick me up with the woman he loved.

……

On the day I got out, I stood outside the steel prison gates in threadbare clothes faded from too many washings.

I was so thin I looked like skin stretched over bones.

I was no longer the bright, proud Elena Carter I had been five years ago.

A black bulletproof car stopped by the road.

Adrian sat in the driver’s seat.

The window slowly rolled down.

“Elena, you’re finally out.”

I raised my head and looked at the man inside.

That was the face I had once loved with everything I had.

But the face I had now was not mine.

This face was covered in scars, some deep, some shallow.

Someone had even carved a word of shame into my skin.

On my first day in prison, the inmates inside heard that “I” had killed a child in a hit-and-run and fled.

They pinned me to the floor and brutalized me in the most degrading way possible.

From that day on, being shoved, cursed, and beaten became part of my life.

Adrian froze.

For a split second, guilt flashed across his face.

Then the passenger-side window rolled down.

Isabella leaned out.

Her face had already been altered.

It no longer looked exactly the same as before.

Of course.

Adrian was New York’s most famous reconstructive surgeon.

He was also the youngest head the Moretti family had ever had.

Giving her a new face was nothing to him.

“Elena, Adrian and I came to pick you up.”

“You spent five years in prison and ended up like this, but we won’t turn our backs on you.”

Every word stabbed into my nerves like a needle.

But I held it in.

I only wanted to see Noah.

Then I would take him away from New York, away from the Moretti family, and away from the so-called empire Adrian and I had built together.

I opened the door and got into the back seat.

Adrian tried to explain.

“Isabella’s health isn’t good. She’s used to sitting in the front, so you…”

“Drive.”

I cut him off.

“I want to see Noah.”

I had no strength left to play along with this sham reunion.

It didn’t matter.

Five years ago, I had already given Isabella my face, my identity, and my life.

What was one passenger seat compared to that?

Adrian’s fingers stiffened on the steering wheel.

Before I could react, Isabella suddenly covered her face and cried.

“Elena, do you still blame me?”

“I was punished too, you know.”

Her voice trembled as if she were the one who had been wronged.

“Adrian wouldn’t let me go out. He said it wasn’t safe.”

“After I moved into the Moretti Estate, he had everything bought and delivered for me. I couldn’t even go to the coffee shop on the corner.”

“And he wouldn’t let me touch the family’s private medical center either. He only gave me shares and dividends.”

“He said I didn’t have enough experience and was afraid the partners would bully me.”

My heart felt like it was being pierced by thousands of thin needles.

Back then, I had told Adrian I hated how Isabella hovered around him with no boundaries.

He had held my hand and promised me.

“Elena, I’ll keep my distance from her.”

“If you don’t like her, I won’t let her show up in our home.”

Now, she had moved straight into the Moretti Estate.

She sat in the place that should have belonged to me.

And that private medical center.

I had built it with Adrian, piece by piece.

I had stayed up night after night with him through investment meetings.

I had helped him keep the made men who refused to recognize his authority in line.

I had helped him handle the off-the-books accounts that could never see daylight.

Back then, he had held me in his arms and said, “Elena, once the medical center is stable, I’ll put it under your name.”

But now, the person who had taken all of it so easily was the enemy who had pushed me into hell.

Adrian panicked a little.

He stopped Isabella in a low voice.

“That’s enough.”

Then he carefully looked at me through the rearview mirror.

“Elena, let’s go home.”

I said nothing.

I only turned my head and looked at the gray sky outside the window.

I used every bit of strength I had to keep my tears from falling.

I thought everything would get better once I saw Noah.

I never knew this was where the real nightmare truly began.
