My Lawyer Fiancé Left Me at the Altar for a Pregnant Fraud Chapter 09

So that was it.

Caspian had laid everything out. Camila panicked, terrified he’d uncover the truth.

So she took the nuclear option, faking a miscarriage to force his hand and trap him into marriage.

It was a solid plan.

She just forgot one thing.

Miscarried fetal tissue contains DNA.

Amniocentesis wouldn’t have been possible for weeks. But Camila’s stunt? It accelerated the inevitable.

Sage sighed on the other end of the line. “See? I told you something was off.”

“If Caspian hadn’t pushed her, she never would’ve been stupid enough to pull this. Eight more months and

we’d all be ruined.”

I let out a quiet laugh. “At least the firm’s reputation is intact.”

And knowing Caspian hadn’t betrayed me-that helped. More than I wanted to admit.

The truth was out. Camila still wouldn’t let go.

She swore Caspian had to honor his promise-marry her. Her family backed her.

Caspian ignored all of it.

He walked into her hospital room and dropped a formal cease-and-desist letter onto her bed.

“Consider this your official notice. I’m pursuing legal action for defamation and fraud. If you persist, I’ll name

your entire family in the suit.”

The room went dead quiet.

Then Camila shattered.

“You can’t do this to me! If it weren’t for you, none of this would’ve happened! Someone-someone-”

She broke down sobbing. The story tumbled out in fragments.

“You couldn’t hold your liquor. That’s why they kept pouring drinks for me that night. I got drunk. I don’t even remember-”

She choked on the words.

“Someone took advantage of me.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Her parents stared at her, aghast.

“Camila. What are you saying?”

“You were-someone else did this?”

Just like that. Caspian was cleared.

Finding the perpetrator was a job for the police, not him.

But Camila had been drinking because of him. Covering for him at whatever event that was.

He felt responsible.

So he agreed to serve as her defense attorney. Seek justice for her.

The case took about a week. Investigation. Prep. Court filings.

By the time Caspian thought to find me, I was already gone.

He showed up at the house with steak and arugula salad. My favorite. Ready to cook. Ready to fix things.

He punched in the door code. Error.

He tried again. Error.

He knocked. Nothing.

Frowning, he pulled out his phone and called me.

“Where are you?”

I watched the wing slice through clouds outside my window. Smiled into the phone.

“I’m on a plane to New York.”

“I know about Camila.”

His voice cracked. “Then why are you still leaving?”

I looked down at the slice of cake on my tray. Buttercream. Same kind he’d made.

“You know what? I terminated the pregnancy.”

“The moment it was done, I went to a bakery and bought myself a slice of cake. The one you made for me

that day.”

“Caspian. I’m leaving for me. Not because of anyone else. You probably forgot-my dream was always

international law. To be an international arbitrator.”

“I’m just finally doing something I should’ve done years ago.”

Silence stretched between us.

I told him the plane was about to take off.

He spoke, his voice quiet and fragile.

“Do we still have a chance?”

I cut into the cake. Took a bite. The cream melted on my tongue. Sweet. Too sweet. Perfect.

“Lowell. Right now, I want to focus on my new life.”

Romance. Relationships. I spent eight years pouring everything into one. Didn’t get a damn thing back.

I wasn’t ready to think about any of that.

His voice steadied, hardening with resolve.

“I’ll wait. No matter what.”

“Marlowe. I’ll wait for you to come home.”

The flight attendant’s voice came over the intercom. Prepare for takeoff.

I answered him. Calm. Final.

“Don’t.”

“Whatever happens, happens.”

Because here’s the truth.

Somewhere in the wreckage of those weeks, I’d let him go.

And once I let go, I realized something.

I didn’t love him anymore.

Loving someone for eight years. Falling out of love in a single moment.

It really does happen that fast.

I didn’t know how to feel about us anymore. Maybe someday I’d find clarity.

But this moment? Right now?

I didn’t want to think about him.

The world was vast. It was waiting.

I wanted to think about myself first.

Decide who I was without him.

Then maybe just maybe, figure out if I had room to love anyone again.
