My Lawyer Fiancé Left Me at the Altar for a Pregnant Fraud Chapter 04

I worked from home for a week to clear my head.

Then I went back to Lowell & Finch LLP.

No one mentioned the engagement reception. They were all professionals. I appreciated that.

Until Camila Quinn walked into the conference room with a hot latte for Caspian.

She tripped over thin air and dumped the entire drink across my MacBook Pro.

Her face went pale. She stumbled backward, hands fluttering.

“Oh my God, Marlowe, I’m so sorry,I didn’t mean to.”

That laptop held every case file for the next two weeks.

Panic seized me. I grabbed my sleeve and started wiping the screen.

“Don’t just stand there—get paper towels.”

Maybe my voice was too sharp.

Camila sank to the floor.

She clutched her stomach and started moaning.

Caspian’s face changed.

He was on his feet. His eyes locked on me, hard and cold.

“Marlowe. You’re really going to do this right in front of me? She’s pregnant.”

It happened so fast I couldn’t get a word in.

He snatched my MacBook Pro off the table and slammed it onto the floor.

“I told you. This situation is still under investigation. There’s no reason to go after her.”

The screen cracked. The chassis split open.

All the composure I’d maintained for a week vanished.

This was the second time he’d publicly humiliated me.Second time he’d chosen her.

I opened my mouth.

He was already across the room. Carrying her.

Everyone in that conference room had watched the whole thing. They stared at me with something worse than pity.

“Marlowe…”

I knelt down and picked up what was left of my laptop.

My sleeve stuck to my arm.

Pain shot through me.

Right. The latte. It was hot.

I looked down. My forearm was bright red. My sleeve was soaked through.

My eyes blurred.

I managed a shrug and forced out a laugh.

“That actually really hurts. Probably shouldn’t have used my own arm as a rag.”

It did hurt.

My arm. My chest. All of it. I was going numb.

Caspian came back without her.

He didn’t say a word. He just shoved open my office door.

The whole firm watched him walk in.

The atmosphere shifted.

He was furious in a way I’d rarely seen.

This wasn’t the controlled anger of the courtroom. This was personal.

He stopped inches from my desk. His voice was low and tight.

“Marlowe. I always believed you could handle this rationally. Clearly I gave you too much credit.”

Rationally.

A woman watches another girl orbit her fiancé for six months. She’s supposed to stay rational.

I thought I’d done a damn good job.

But Caspian had made his choice. He’d sided with her. No questions asked.

Third time.

First, the ballroom. Then, the hospital. Now, this.

You don’t reach three by accident.

My mother’s face floated up in my mind. The way she looked right before the end.

I closed my eyes and swallowed the last of it.

The last drop of whatever I’d been holding onto.

“I really loved you, Caspian. That’s why I kept telling myself not to make a rash decision. I wanted to give you a chance. An actual defense.”

“I told myself to stop overthinking. I chose to trust you. I told myself not to let the fear win.”

“But I was wrong.”

He’d made his choice. He made it the second he walked out of that ballroom.

My voice cracked. I let it.

And then the last thread of hope snapped inside me.

I wiped my eyes. I stood up.

I set a document on the desk between us.

“Sign it. The terms are fair. I’m selling my stake and withdrawing from the partnership, effective immediately.”

I met his eyes.

“And I’m done. We’re done.”
