Ethan looked like he was losing his mind. 

“That’s impossible! We hadn’t broken up that night. How could you say yes to him?” 

“If we weren’t broken up, why were you rooming 

with someone else?” 

“That was…” 

He choked on his words. He stepped forward, 

desperate. 

“It wasn’t intentional. I just didn’t want people knowing about us. Jake set the whole thing up. I just went along with it.” 

“And nothing happened with Sophia. I swear. Ask 

her yourself.” 

He shoved his phone toward me. I didn’t take it. 

“I already know. Sophia announced her new boyfriend, some rich guy in Meadowbrook. She’s set for life. Doesn’t have to work a day.” 

“That must sting. Is that why you flew all the way 

to Crestwood?” 

Ethan’s hand dropped. His jaw 

was tight. 

“No. I came because I didn’t want you to think I 

was choosing her over you.” 

“I like you. I love you. I’m not letting you walk away over something this small.” 

I laughed. I couldn’t help it. 

“You love me. But you kept us a secret and roomed with another girl.” 

“Why do you keep harping on that? Nothing happened.” 

“Does nothing happening mean I’m not allowed to care? Then why did you tell me to go find Jake instead of letting me room with Liam?” 

Ethan went pale. His voice lost its edge. “That’s… that’s different.” 

He spun toward Liam. “What about him? He’s been obsessed with you for four years. That’s creepy. How can you be with him?” 

I stepped in before Liam could answer. “Ethan, you’ve been obsessed with Sophia for four years. You were hung up on her the whole time you were with me. If anyone’s creepy, it’s you.” 

“I…” 

“That’s enough.” 

Liam pulled me gently behind him, cutting off 

whatever Ethan was about to say. 

“Ethan, I’ve known about you two from the start. I was ready to step aside if you made her happy.” 

“But when I saw Jake rig the draw, and I saw you choose Sophia anyway, I knew I had my opening.” 

“I took it. And I won.” 

“You gave up on your future with her. So stay out of 

ours.” 

He took my hand and turned away. Ethan lunged for me, but I pulled free before he could grab me. 

At the elevator, I remembered something. 

“Oh, and Ethan. I turned down the job. So yours is 

gone too.” 

“You should probably head back to Meadowbrook and start looking. Rent’s expensive there, and without me splitting it with you, you’re not gonna be able to 

afford it.” 

The elevator doors slid 

shut on his face, pale, frozen, defeated. 

That was the last I saw of him. 

Beside me, Liam tightened his grip on my hand. 

We’d known each other for seven years. We’d been 

together for two days. 

He bent down, looking me straight in the eyes. 

“You don’t have to worry. I’m not like him.” 

“I mean it. I love you. I won’t let you go. I won’t leave you.” 

“Next year, I’ll watch the Perseids with you.” 

His words hung in the air for a moment before I 

nodded, smiling. 

“Okay.” 

The years had turned. 

And finally, I had someone who loved me with his 

whole heart.
