The CEO’s Secret Lover Watched Him Choose Another Chapter 08

We spent the whole day with both sets of parents. After dropping mine off at home and Liam’s at their hotel, I was so exhausted I could barely keep my eyes open in the passenger seat.

Liam leaned over and buckled my seatbelt for me.

“Sleep. I’ll wake you when we get to your place.”

I mumbled an okay.

But no matter how tired I was, sleep wouldn’t come. I finally gave up and sat up straight, watching

his profile.

“Liam,” I asked, “how did you keep going for so

long?”

His eyes stayed on the road, but his right hand

found mine and squeezed.

“You mean, how lucky am I that I held on.”

“Lucky I came on that trip.”

At a red light, he turned to look at me.

“I found a place here in Crestwood. Signing the

lease tomorrow.”

“And about the jobs… thank your parents for me.”

I shook my head. “You don’t need to feel weird

about it. You were more than qualified for that

company. My parents just passed along our résumés. They hired you because you earned it, not because of any connection.”

He smiled and squeezed my fingers again. “Still. Thank you.”

“Thank you for all of this. For letting this finally happen.”

I let him hold my hand for a moment, then pulled away so he could focus on driving.

Outside the window was the city I’d grown up in.

I’d been ready to give it up for Ethan. The company’s hiring process had been brutal, eight rounds of interviews, each one grinding me down until I cried afterward. But I kept going because if I got in, I could refer him. We’d work together. We’d build a life together.

But some things weren’t meant to be.

We pulled up in front of my building. I was yawning as I got out of the car when Liam stepped in front of me.

“Want me to get rid of him?”

I looked up. Ethan was running toward us, panting under the streetlight.

He stopped in front of me, breathless. “Olivia, you can’t just run off with some guy because you’re mad at

me.”

“I talked to my parents. I’ll move to Crestwood. Forget the job in Meadowbrook. Come back with me. I’ll post about us right now.”

I frowned. “Ethan, what ‘us‘?”

He straightened up, wiping sweat from his forehead. “Don’t do this. People are going to think you’re really together.”

“I already told Jake and everyone else before I got on the plane. They know we’re together. Now I’ll put it

on my feed.”

I understood. He thought this was all an act, met pretending to be with Liam to punish him.

I slipped my arm through Liam’s and let out a quiet

laugh.

“I wasn’t acting. The night we drew numbers, Liam asked me in his room. I said yes. That’s why he came to Crestwood right away to set up the dinner.”

“We’re getting engaged next month.”
