Even after three years with Olivia, Sophia still held

That was why he’d let Jake set them up. Why he’d 

scrapped his plan to come clean. Why, when it came to 

the meteor shower, he’d chosen her. 

He told himself it was fine. He’d build a life with 

Olivia. This one last indulgence was just closure, a final

He mumbled something about a relative and 

walked Sophia back to the hotel. 

She stayed quiet, her eyes red, and retreated into 

their room without another word. 

The moment the door closed, Ethan hurried to 

Olivia’s floor. 

He knocked. No answer. Called. No answer. Texted. 

Nothing. 

Frustration boiled over. He sent voice messages, 

each one sharper than the last. 

“Olivia, I know you’re awake. You said you were 

staying up for the shower. Open the door.” 

“What is your problem? Because I’m rooming with 

Sophia?” 

“Grow up. You know the rules. We drew the same 

number. I didn’t have a choice.” 

“And what about you? You drew Liam’s number. 

You’re sleeping in the same room as him.” 

He remembered Liam had already left and swiped 

the message away. 

“Just open up. I’ll show you the photos I took.” 

“If it bothers you that much, fine. I’ll come clean after we start our jobs. Is that enough?” 

He sent dozens of messages. None of them got a 

reply. 

Ethan’s patience snapped. 

“Fine. If you want to make this into a whole thing, 

go ahead.” 

He went back to his room at three in the morning. Sophia was already asleep. He showered quickly and lay down on the floor. 

He didn’t wake until noon. The first thing he did 

was reach for his phone. 

Still nothing. 

Behind him, Sophia stirred. 

“Ethan, do you remember when Olivia ran into me 

at the tennis courts? I hurt my knee and needed a 

crutch for a month.” 

“You came running over to check on me. You 

brought me food every day. My mom said you were 

husband material.” 

Ethan was still staring at his phone. He answered 

absently. “Olivia didn’t run into you. You slipped 

because the floor was wet.” 

“I came over to make sure you didn’t blame her.” 

Sophia sat up, disbelief written across her face. 

“Then why were you bringing me meals?” 

“Because you kept saying it was her fault. I was 

worried you’d take it out on her. And I was bringing 

food for both of you anyway. The extra was for Olivia.” 

He stopped. 

The truth had slipped out, even he hadn’t realized 

he’d been thinking it. 

Sophia’s eyes narrowed. The softness was gone. 

“So I was right. You and Olivia are together. She’s the one who got you that job.” 

“What is wrong with you? How do you go from 

someone like me to someone like her?” 

The room went still. 

Ethan sat up slowly. When he looked at her, his 

voice had gone cold. 

“What do you mean, ‘someone like her‘?” 

“Olivia is more real than you. Smarter. Works 

harder.” 

“Unlike you, who strung me along for four years. while dating eight other guys.“
