Gideon looked up, stunned. The woman before him no longer held a trace of warmth. Her eyes were frozen. Empty of 

affection. Nothing left but disgust. 

“Gideon Hale. You didn’t really think you were the only one who came back, did you?” She smiled. Cold. “I returned before you. I arranged everything for my parents ahead of time. Then I found Serena Whitfield. Offered her your divorce as payment. She agreed to play her part.” 

“You killed my child. Forced me to sign away my assets. This is just my small revenge. Because I remember every single thing you did to me.” 

Gideon stumbled backward. His voice scraped out. Barely audible. “How… how did you figure it out?” 

“The Gideon of this timeline knows I can never fall back asleep once I’m woken up. He would never call me at three in the morning. But the Gideon from three years later–the one who only had room for Serena in his head–he wouldn’t even remember that.” 

She laid out his favoritism toward another woman in that calm, flat voice. Completely expressionless. 

Gideon’s chest caved. The excuse came out weak. “Seraphina. I did keep it in my heart. I just…” 

“Just found Serena Whitfield newer. Fresher. More interesting than the childhood sweetheart you’d known for twenty–five years.” She finished his sentence for him without effort. Took another step back. “So naturally, you poured your attention into her. Assumed I’d wait for you forever.”

“After I found out about the affair, being near you made me physically sick. No one wants someone else’s leftovers. I’m no 

different.” Her voice stayed soft. “Gideon Hale. If you won’t 

die, then get the hell away from me. Stay out of my sight for 

the rest of your life.” 

Every gentle word was a blade shredding his heart. He stared 

at her. “So this whole wedding… it was just a trap…” 

She covered her mouth. Laughed. Almost puzzled. “You 

deceived me first. You went behind my back with my best 

friend. Had children with her. And you still expected me to 

greet you with a smile?” 

His throat constricted. He thought of the child. Lunged for it like a drowning man clutching driftwood. “But the baby. What about our baby?” 

She smiled brighter. But couldn’t hide the anguish bleeding through her eyes. “The baby? I terminated it. You forgot? You drugged me on our engagement day. I couldn’t keep it. And my body needs years of treatment before I can ever conceive 

again.” 

Gideon dropped to his knees. Clutched the hem of her dress. 

“Seraphina. I know I was wrong. I know you hate me. But 

we’re already married. I’ll spend my whole life making it 

right.” 

She looked at his hands. Remembered him snapping her wrist. 

Her body reacted before her mind–she kicked him away. 

Hard. Then pulled out the divorce papers he’d blindly signed 

minutes ago. Her voice was ice. 

“Don’t bother. We’re already divorced. The person you have a 

real marriage with is Serena Whitfield. She’s your wife. Now you don’t have to hide your little cohabitation behind my back anymore.” 

He knelt on the floor. Broken. Watched her push another woman into his arms. Serena threw herself at him, ecstatic. Overjoyed at finally being chosen. She didn’t see the frozen wasteland in his eyes. 

This time Seraphina didn’t need to go to the press. Gideon himself nailed Serena to the post of public disgrace first. 

He exposed everything. Every detail of Serena’s betrayal. How Seraphina had been the only one to reach out when Serena was being bullied. The only hand extended. She’d sent the bullies to prison. Paid for the skin grafts to heal the scars from the curling iron burns. Covered all her tuition. All her living expenses. Sat beside her through five years of therapy. 

And the first thing Serena did after crawling out of that darkness? She climbed into her best friend’s boyfriend’s bed. 

He didn’t even try to clean up his own image. Just let the internet crucify them both. Cheating scumbags. Rocks thrown in the street. Blades and dead rats in the mail. Red paint splashed across their front door. Gideon endured every bit of it in silence. Exactly the way Seraphina once had. 

The online firestorm lasted a full year. By the time he found Seraphina again, his body had wasted to bones. 

She just looked at him and smiled. “Have you ever been electroshocked? Fought a dog for food? Tumbled down hundreds of stairs and shattered seven bones? Did your childhood sweetheart also cheat on you and have children with 

another man behind your back?” 

One calm question after another. Each one sealed his mouth. 

before a single word could escape. He covered his eyes. Tears seeped through his fingers. 

She walked away. Long after she was gone, he was still there. Apologizing. Broken. Unraveled. 

But apologies are the cheapest currency in the world. Seraphina didn’t need them. Didn’t want them. 

Later, she inherited both the Grant and Hale family estates. Under her parents‘ guidance, she threw herself into learning how to be a worthy heir. Contracts worth tens of millions piled across her desk. 

So when word came that Gideon Hale had gone completely insane inside that psychiatric facility, she paused for only a moment. Then tossed the notice into the trash. 

A stranger. That was all he was to me now. Nothing more.
