Karen, who had been watching from the side, laughed awkwardly.

Derek nervously twisted his fingers. “Ms. Blake, I-”

“What Ms. Blake? Didn’t I already tell HR to fire you? Why are you still here?”

“Where is Brian? Get him over here right now.”

Madison looked Derek up and down, the disgust in her eyes impossible to hide.

A few minutes later, Brian jogged over to us.

“Brian Miller, did I not make myself clear, or are you blind and incapable of reading?”

“I told you to fire Derek Walsh. Why is he still here?”

I took the chance to add, “Not only did HR fail to fire him, but they promoted him to assistant

manager.”

I wanted to know the reason behind all this more than anything.

To my surprise, Brian looked confused even after being chewed out.

“Ms. Blake, I thought you were joking. After all, Derek is your cousin.”

This time, Madison let out an angry laugh.

She stared at Derek like a tiger watching prey.

“You’re my cousin? How come I didn’t know that?”

“Which side of my family are you supposedly from?”

Linda tried to step forward to protect him, but Madison scared her back with a single look.

Linda ducked her head and muttered, “This is all just a misunderstanding.”

Derek’s body went weak with embarrassment. “Ms. Blake, please let me explain. I was only joking.”‘

His voice was low by the end, but Brian still heard him.

He looked at Derek with confusion and anger. “What did you just say? You were messing with me?”

The others looked at Derek with contempt too.

Over the next five minutes, Madison and I finally learned the whole truth.

First, Derek had hired someone to create an AI-generated photo of him and Madison.

Then he had taken that photo to fool Richard, claiming that he and Madison were close friends.

That explained why he had Richard’s phone number and why they had even met.

As for HR, after Madison notified them yesterday that Derek should be fired, Brian had contacted

Derek.

But Derek sent Brian that AI-generated photo.

“Brian, are you kidding me? I’m Madison’s cousin. You can fire anyone else, but you can’t fire me.”

Brian had not dared to ask Madison directly, so he ended up becoming the fall guy.

After Derek’s smooth lies, Brian not only failed to fire him, but promoted him instead.

Just as I was thinking about how good Derek was at playing people and lying his way out of trouble, he blurted out, still unwilling to give up.

“I did all of this for Evelyn. We’re getting married soon. If I don’t make more money, how am I

supposed to support you?”

“You love expensive food so much. If I’m not capable, you’ll eat me into bankruptcy.”‘

I was stunned.

I truly could not believe that after everything had reached this point, he still dared to talk nonsense.

“Derek Walsh, do you think I’m too nice to report you for defamation?”

Madison could not hold back.

She kicked him in the stomach. “Evelyn would have to be blind, brain-dead, and cursed by every

bad decision in the universe before she’d ever look twice at trash like you.”

“If she never looked twice at me, why did she secretly hug me?” Derek craned his neck and

shouted.

“She hugged me, and she kissed me too. Explain that, Evelyn. Explain it.”
