He Always Said Yes, But Never Heard Me Until I Left Chapter 05

My throat began to tighten, and a red rash spread across my arms.

I pressed the call button.

Reid finally removed his earbuds and glanced at me.

“What’s wrong?”

Paige answered for me. “Maybe she ate too fast and upset her stomach. I’ll go get a nurse.”

She’d barely reached the door when her phone rang.

It was someone from the wedding venue, urging them to come over.

Reid checked the time, then glanced at the nurse who was already approaching. He set the takeout container aside.

“Could you take care of her? I need to step out for a bit.”

I watched him put his earbuds back in.

“Reid.”

He turned and reached out to touch my cheek.

“I hate you so much.”

My voice had already turned hoarse.

“I never want to see you again.”

He nodded.

“Okay, baby. I’ll make it up to you when I get back.”

Paige called to him from the doorway. He withdrew his hand and followed her out.

I managed a hollow smile as tears soaked my pillow. The nurse bent over to examine me, then urgently called for a doctor.

My hospital bed was quickly wheeled out of the room.

The last thing I saw was the two of them walking side by side at the far end of the hallway.

When I woke up again, the doctor told me I’d survived the severe allergic reaction, but the baby hadn’t.

I lowered my eyes to my stomach and remained silent for a long time.

The nurse said they’d tried reaching my emergency contact, but the call had been hung up. Later, the only response they’d received was a message telling them to contact Paige if anything came up.

I reached for my phone and called my mother.

The moment I heard her say my name, the tears I’d been holding back finally spilled over.

“Mom, I want to come home.”

She immediately heard that something was wrong and panicked.

“What happened, sweetheart? Don’t be scared. I’ll come get you.”

I canceled the apartment viewing.

As the car pulled away from the hospital, a message from Reid finally appeared on my phone.

Reid: [What do you feel like eating? I’ll bring you something tonight.]

I didn’t reply. I blocked his number.

Reid, I never want to see you again. Not for the rest of my life.
