I stretched and lay back down.

Chloe had never taken school seriously. Now she spent her days lounging at home, and her parents never pressured her to get a job.

Since I was here, I might as well enjoy it.

I pulled up the covers and went back to sleep.

When I woke, a housekeeper was standing beside the bed.

I jolted fully awake and frowned at her.

“What are you doing by my bed?”

She looked even more alarmed than I felt.

“Miss Whitmore, you have a visitor. He said it was urgent, so I was waiting for you to wake up.”

Realizing she meant no harm, I waved her off.

My phone showed 99+ unread messages, all from Ethan.

That explained who was waiting downstairs.

I straightened my clothes and headed downstairs.

“Ethan, you wanted to see me?”

He whipped around on the couch, then got up and walked around me in amazement.

“This is unbelievable. How did you actually swap bodies with her?” he whispered in my ear.

I pushed his head away.

“Why are you here? Didn’t I tell you to stay out of it and wait and see what happened?”

“I was worried about you. Besides, I wanted to see this body swap for myself.”

I shook my head and explained how the swap worked, but kept my second chance at life to myself. That was the one secret I still had to protect. Even if I planned to spend my life with him, I couldn’t tell him everything until all this was settled.

“But how did you know she’d cause trouble in your body? I just heard security threw her out of your

office.”

Ngave him a sideways glance.

“Because I already knew what she was really like. Besides, her excuse for swapping bodies made no sense. Why would a beautiful rich girl want to try living like someone who started with nothing? Either she wanted something, or she just wanted to wreck my life. I just didn’t expect her to ke it

this far.”

I lowered my head, pretending to be hurt, though some of the sadness was real.

Chloe had been the first friend I’d made after escaping my family. She’d meant a lot to me.

Her betrayal was part of what had broken me in my previous life.

Looking back, she’d probably only seen me as something to keep her entertained. Still, I couldn’t understand why she’d been so determined to ruin my life.

I shook my head, pushing those thoughts away.

That wreck of a life was hers now. It had nothing to do with me anymore.

Ethan pulled me into his arms.

“Nora, I won’t let you face this kind of thing alone again. Whatever happens, tell me. We’ll figure it

out together.”

I hugged him back and gently patted his back.

“We’ll handle things together from now on. But first, you need to stop calling me Nora. I’m Chloe

now.”

“You’re right. We need to be careful about things like that now that you’ve switched bodies.”

He reluctantly lifted his head.

“I should go. Anyone who doesn’t know the truth will think I’m cheating. I’ll come see you again

when this is over.”

I nodded and watched him leave.

“So he’s the guy you like?”

The voice grew louder. I turned and saw Ryan coming down the stairs toward me.

“Yeah. Is that a problem?”

I didn’t let my reaction show. Ethan and I had been speaking quietly. Ryan shouldn’t have been able

to hear us from upstairs.

“Didn’t you say he was hard to win over? He’s already visiting you at home. Looks like things are moving along.”

He poured himself a glass of water and took a drink, his expression unchanged.

I relaxed. He must have left his room just as Ethan was leaving. He hadn’t heard anything he

shouldn’t have.

Chloe probably would’ve snapped, “Mind your own damn business.”

If I wanted to change how her family saw me, I’d have to do it gradually.

“Don’t worry about it. I’m taking things at my own pace.”

He didn’t press me. Relieved, I waved and headed upstairs.
