She Wanted My Body for Three Days? Fine, She Can Keep It Forever! Chapter 01

My best friend got her hands on an enchanted ring. If two people wore it at the same time, they could swap bodies for three days.

In my previous life, she used my body to quit the job where I’d spent three years working toward a promotion, blow through my savings, and alienate everyone at the company.

Then she cheated on my boyfriend while pretending to be me. We were about to get married, but he broke up with me.

When we switched back three days later, she’d destroyed the life I’d spent ten years building on my own.

No one was there to help me pick up the pieces. No one could give me a fresh start.

I broke down completely and took my own life.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day she’d brought me the ring.

She smiled and asked, “Want to swap bodies for three days?”

I pretended to hesitate before answering. “Sure. I’d like to see what that rich-girl life of yours is really like.”

She handed me one of the rings and slipped the other onto her own finger.

I put mine on, too.

“Remember,” she said with a smile, “no matter what happens, you can’t take it off for three days.”

I nodded, but the second she turned away, I slipped mine off.

I couldn’t wait to see her face when she realized we weren’t switching back.

…

I composed myself, said goodbye to my best friend, Chloe Whitmore, and went home.

In my previous life, the body swap hadn’t happened until midnight.

I’d learned too late that putting on the rings together was enough to trigger the swap. Keeping them on for three full days was the only way to reverse it.

Once either ring came off, there was no going back.

I’d already tried that in my previous life. After discovering the mess she’d made of my life, I’d put my ring on and secretly slipped hers onto her finger, hoping we could swap again.

When I realized it wouldn’t work and fell apart, all she did was laugh.

Only then did she explain the catch: anyone who’d already swapped bodies couldn’t do it a second time.

I’d lost all hope of going on.

But things were different now.

I smiled. This time, I wouldn’t be the one panicking.

I took out the ring and slipped it back on without hesitation. We’d already activated it by wearing it at the same time. Now it was just jewelry.

Besides, I needed her to see me wearing it. Otherwise, how could I watch her fall apart when she finally realized she’d ruined everything and couldn’t go back?

After a moment’s thought, I pinned my parents’ message threads to the top. I’d blocked them years ago.

They’d never wanted me to get an education. When I was in college, they’d even shown up on campus to cause a scene.

The only thing that stopped them was my threat to call the police. I warned them that a criminal record could jeopardize their precious son’s career prospects.

They still demanded that I get a job after graduation and send them money.

I ignored them. As soon as I graduated, I moved far away and spent the next ten years building a life here. I never posted on social media or shared my location, so they had no way to find me.

Now Chloe could deal with them.

I was about to lie back down when another idea came to me.

I left my ID and debit card on the nightstand, then helpfully took a picture and sent it to Chloe.

Nora: [Chloe, my ID and debit card are on the nightstand. I figured I’d let you know so you wouldn’t have to look for them.]

Chloe replied: [Okay.]

She followed it with a cutesy sticker.

Before, I would’ve thought she was sweet and adorable. Now everything she said and did made me sick.

I shook my head and put my phone facedown on the bed. I didn’t want to look at it anymore.

Then I remembered I wasn’t finished.

I quickly picked up my phone again and texted my boyfriend, Ethan Reed.

Nora: [Ethan, starting tomorrow, I won’t be myself. Please don’t reply to any messages from me over the next few days, no matter what they say.]

Ethan: [Why? Did something happen?]

Even through his texts, I could tell he was worried.

Nora: [Everything’s fine. Just do what I asked. You know me. I wouldn’t mess with you like this.]

Ethan: […Okay. I’ll do what you asked.]

I let out a relieved breath.

I couldn’t let him catch on too soon. That would throw off my whole plan.

By the time I’d washed up and gotten ready for bed, it was almost eleven. I got into bed and waited for midnight.

As soon as the clock struck twelve, I felt a little dizzy. Then I caught a familiar scent.

Chloe and I had swapped bodies.

She always had a scented candle burning in her bedroom. I recognized the scent immediately.

I slowly opened my eyes to the soft glow of her night-light and the pink canopy over her bed.

I finally relaxed, pulled the covers up, and went back to sleep.

It was my turn to enjoy Chloe’s life as a beautiful, wealthy woman who had everything handed to her.
