The System Admitted Its Mistake—So I Offered Him a Divorce Chapter 06

I was out in the yard.

The stray cats I adopted all ran over to rub against my feet.

My heart softened.

I crouched and stroked their little heads.

My assistant called again with a summary of last week’s work.

She paused briefly.

Then she asked cautiously.

“Are you going to the family dinner on Saturday alone?”

stood and straightened my clothes.

“Yes. Just me.”

My assistant practically gritted her teeth.

“If your oldest brother finds out, he’s bound to say something awful…”

I went quiet for a few seconds.

Julian hated me.

But his sense of moral responsibility was overwhelming

He couldn’t stand by and let his wife be humiliated.

I went back to the family estate every week for dinner.

He always came with me, however unwillingly.

The story of our marriage was already all over our social circle.

My oldest brother, Ryan Bennett, loved picking fights with me.

At one Saturday dinner, he was waiting by the door well before we arrived.

The moment he saw me, he started in without mercy.

“Lily, you walk around acting so respectable, then pull these shameless stunts behind everyone’s backs. Forsing a man to marry you? You’ve embarrassed the entire Bennett family.”

“Take a look in the mirror sometime. You’re money-grubbing trash. You think you’re good

enough for a family as cultured as the Hayeses?”

“Even if your little scheme worked, Julian will never respect you. You’re a joke.”

His words reflected exactly what everyone else thought of our marriage.

I gave Ryan a dismissive look.

I was about to fire back.

Someone took my right hand and held it firmly.

I froze for a moment.

Julian’s warm, amused voice sounded beside me. He spoke calmly, every word hitting a sore

spot.

“Forced marriage?”

“It’s a little game between husband and wife. Outsiders make up all kinds of things. You didn’t actually believe them, did you, Ryan?”

“Oh, sorry. I forgot your wife left you. I suppose a man who got dumped by his own wife can’t

stand seeing a happy couple.”

Ryan’s expression changed instantly. “Hayes, you…”

I raised a hand to shield Julian behind me.

“Ryan, do you want me to tell Dad what you’ve been doing?””

Ryan choked on his reply. After gritting his teeth for a while, he turned on Julian again.

“Julian, you think Lily’s some kind of prize? She loses interest in everything. You can’t trust a word she says. None of her boyfriends lasted more than a week.”

“How long do you think it’ll take before she gets bored and kicks you to the curb?”

Julian’s eyes darkened. He was silent for a few seconds, then gave a perfectly gracious smile.

“You don’t need to worry about that.”

Ryan slunk away.

I hugged Julian’s arm, rose on my toes, and planted a hard kiss on his cheek.

“You’re such a good husband. I love you. Mwah, mwah, mwah.”

Julian let go of my hand. Without even looking at me, he said coldly.

“Lily, don’t kiss me whenever you feel like it. I’m not like those boyfriends of yours. I don’t

like it.”

I licked my lips. “Oh. Okay.”

Julian stopped.

His already sour expression darkened further.

He shook me off and strode away.
