The System Admitted Its Mistake—So I Offered Him a Divorce Chapter 04

I froze. “What did you say?”

The System spun in frantic circles.

[Mission Control made a mistake. You’re a supporting character, not the female lead! Julian, the male lead, pursued the wrong woman!]

[Now they want to correct it. You have to leave him right away, or the universe will punish you!]

I more or less understood what happened and quickly calmed down. “What kind of punishment?”

The System said, “Three days of electric shocks.”

That didn’t bother me.

The System said, “Confiscation of all your assets.”

That terrified me.

“Fine, fine, I’m leaving. Right now.”

The System went silent.

A moment passed in silence.

I still couldn’t help asking.

“If I’m the wrong one, who’s the actual female lead?”

“Let me check. Her name is… Sophie Carter.”

I went still.

That heartfelt love letter suddenly flashed through my mind.

So it was her.

She was the girl Julian used to adore.

Maybe he still did.

I wanted to laugh, but no sound came out.

I asked another question.

“Does Julian know?”

The System answered.

“The System assigned to notify him is late again, so he doesn’t know yet.”

“Host, that’s better for you. If he knew, things would get complicated. After all, he’s not exactly fond of you…”

The System’s voice grew quieter and quieter.

But every word was true.

He didn’t like me. He hated me, in fact. If he learned the truth, he’d probably tear me apart.

And my family went through so much upheaval over the past month.

Dealing with all those people every day exhausted me. I had no energy left to deal with Julian, too.

After a long silence, I nodded faintly. “Yeah. You’re right.”

My conversation with the System was over.

I was sleepy, too.

I decided to go downstairs for a glass of milk, then go to bed.

I passed the primary bedroom.

A voice was still coming from inside.

That surprised me.

Julian kept a healthy sleep schedule. Except when I forced myself on him, he was always asleep by ten.

Puzzled, I stepped closer.

He was on the phone, speaking with a tenderness and patience I had never heard from him before.

“Sophie, don’t worry. I’ll call and check for you now. He should…”

Sophie.

So it was Sophie Carter.

I stood frozen for a long moment.

Then I slowly turned and went back to my bedroom.

The divorce settlement agreement arrived in my inbox early the next morning.

The next morning, I printed it and went downstairs.

Julian was already seated in the dining room.

He heard my footsteps.

He kept eating without looking up.

I pushed aside the milk on the table.

Then I tossed the document envelope in front of him.

Julian looked up at me questioningly.

I smiled faintly.

“The divorce agreement. Take a look. Anything you want to add?”

His fists abruptly clenched.

He gave me no answer.

I waved a hand in front of his face.

“Hello? Julian? Why are you staring? Too happy to speak?”

Julian came back to himself.

He stared at my face, inches from his, for a long time.

Then one corner of his mouth moved.

“Yes. I’m overjoyed. I’m finally getting rid of you.”

“Lily, you have no idea how long I’ve waited for this…”

Knowing it was one thing.

Hearing it was another.

The words stung.

I pretended to be calm and urged him on.

“Then sign it.”

Julian fell silent.

He read the agreement over and over, but made no move to sign.

“You… you’re always scheming. You love lying. How do I know you haven’t slipped something into this agreement?”

“What if I overlook something and fall into another trap, and the divorce can’t go through? Or you force me to marry you again later?”

I was furious.

Was I that kind of person?

Fine. I used to be.

I sighed.

I tried to sound as sincere as possible.

“No, Julian. Don’t worry. I honestly want a divorce.”

Julian went quiet again.

This time, a very long silence passed before he spoke.

“Fine. A divorce. I finally get to divorce you, Lily. You have no idea how happy I am…”

“Uh-huh. Keep reading. I need to take a call.”

I answered my secretary’s call.

I walked toward the balcony.

“Yes, the man the family matriarch tried to set me up with.”

“He’s still unmarried? Then arrange it. We can meet next weekend.”

“Yes, I’m getting divorced. Go ahead and set it up. I’m in a hurry.”

Love was gone. My career couldn’t go with it.

If I couldn’t marry someone I loved, I might as well marry someone useful to me.

The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea.

I hung up.

I didn’t notice a thing.

The smile froze on the face of the man behind me.

The divorce agreement slowly crumpled in his fist.
