She Took My Wedding, So I Married the Don Chapter 06

Luca arrived nine minutes after I called. I know because I counted.

He walked the lot in silence. Looked at the door. Looked at the rose. Looked at me, standing barefoot in broken glass.

Then he picked me up like I weighed nothing and carried me to the car.

“I can walk.”

“There’s glass.”

“Luca-”

“Sloane.” His voice cracked-just slightly. “Let me.”

I let him.

The estate was dark when we arrived. He led me upstairs to a huge bedroom-dark wood, gray sheets, a window

overlooking the gardens.

“Yours,” he said.

“This is your room.”

“I’ll take the couch.”

“You’re six-foot-six. You’ll break the couch.”

“Then I’ll break it.” And he shut the door.

I lay in his bed, surrounded by his smell, and stared at the ceiling. You’re next. Someone wanted me dead because I’d

married a man for a piece of paper.

I must’ve dozed, because a sound woke me.

A low, ragged noise from the sitting room. Like someone being strangled.

I found Luca on the couch, too big for it, one arm thrown over his face, his whole body rigid. Sweating. Muttering in

Italian.

“No-Sofia, no, non la macchina-”

“Luca.” I touched his shoulder.

His hand shot up and locked around my wrist. Hard. His eyes flew open-wild, black, not seeing me at all.

Then they focused.

He let go like I’d burned him. “Did I hurt you? Dio, Sloane, did I-”

“You didn’t hurt me.”

He sat up, head in his hands, breathing like he’d run a mile. I sat beside him.

“Every night?” I asked.

“Most.”

“Since Sofia.”

He nodded.

I didn’t say anything. I just leaned my head against his arm. After a long moment, he let out a breath that shook his

whole body-and leaned back.

We fell asleep like that. Sitting up. My hand on his chest, his heartbeat slowing under my palm.

No nightmares came back.

Gia woke us at eight, pale, holding out her phone.

“You need to see this.”

Bianca’s Instagram. Eleven thousand likes and climbing. A photo of me and Luca on the courthouse steps, his mouth

on mine.

My jealous sister married a MOBSTER to sabotage my wedding. She stole from our parents. She tried to ruin my baby’s family. I’m praying for her. ? #FamilyFirst #BlessedBride

The comments were vicious. Psycho. Gold digger. Trash.

My hands shook. Not with hurt. With rage.

Then Luca went very still beside me and took the phone.

He scrolled to one comment. Pinned at the top. A verified account, a profile picture of a man in a white suit with a

cruel, handsome smile.

@marco.castellano: Congratulations, bella. Save me a dance on Saturday. ?

A black rose emoji.

The same black rose that had been tucked under the Shelby’s wiper.

“Marco Castellano,” Luca said quietly, “is going to your sister’s wedding.”

He looked up at me. And for the first time since I’d met him, I saw it-the Devil of the Docks. Cold. Calm. Absolutely

lethal.

“Then so are we.”
