They Granted Her 100 Wishes And Forgot I Was Dying Too Chapter 10

By then, I was back in my own world.

I opened an embedded-chip design studio, specializing in low-power chips for medical devices.

I’d wanted to work in that field since college, but I put it aside for our five-person company’s consumer chip

project. Ten years went by that way.

With no one else to accommodate, I could finally focus on my own research.

Then, one day, the system interface appeared again.

[The other world’s central force has dissipated. Its governing rules are coming apart.]

[Host connection to that world detected. Return and restart its timeline?]

I studied the message for a moment, then calmly tapped [Decline].

The system didn’t disappear. Instead, it projected a live view of the other world.

Bottomless chasms split the ground. Entire blocks of office towers and apartment buildings collapsed, and

dust blotted out the sky.

Molly had just escaped the basement storage room. Before she’d taken more than a few steps, a falling

beam struck her from above.

She didn’t even have time to scream before the rubble swallowed her.

My brother, Sophie, Ryan, and Evan ran through the collapsing streets.

They were injured all over but kept shouting.

“Maya! Where are you?”

“Maya! We’re sorry! We were wrong!”

The crash of falling buildings drowned them out. Then a warped black rift tore open beside my studio

window.

Their bodies were half trapped in the turbulence between worlds. All four of them strained to reach me first.

“Maya! Come back with us!”

“We’ll give you back the company! The house, too! Everything!”

“Please come back. We know we were wrong!”

“We were wrong about everything. Punish us however you want. Just come back!”

I didn’t step forward or say a word.

The rift narrowed, and the current pulling at them grew stronger.

Their voices faded, and their outstretched hands drifted farther away.

Finally, their cries and apologies vanished into the air with them.

The space beside the window went still, as though nothing had happened.

I turned, sat down at my desk, and marked the next set of parameters in the corner of a schematic.

The Maya Bennett who placed all her hopes in other people was gone for good.

Only I remained, whole, following my own path.
