The Comments Told Me To Run, He Wouldn’t Let Me Chapter 03

Here’s what I’d forgotten.

All these years, the dependency had gone both ways between Alden and me.

Aquatic shifters just don’t go into heat as often.

Maybe once every six months.

But I’m a rabbit.

Multiple times a month, I needed his hands on me, his mouth on mine, and his scent filling my lungs.

Somewhere along the way, I’d convinced myself I was the only one taking from him.

I forgot.

It was autumn now.

His season was starting.

Alden had already killed the light.

He was so much bigger than me.

That lean frame was deceptive. He was all muscle underneath.

Without even trying, he covered me completely.

…

When the light came back on, I was drenched in sweat. My hair was plastered to my forehead.

Alden scooped me up and carried me to the bathroom.

His voice was still rough.

He pressed his forehead against mine.

“Still think you don’t need me?”

“Tell me. Is that why I raised you? So you could say things like that to me?”

My ears throbbed. My tail ached. I didn’t dare say a word, and tears were already spilling over.

[Wait, wasn’t this supposed to be a genius-duo mech romance? A reserved ML and a cool FL? Where did THIS plot come from?]

[Author, EXPLAIN. Right now.]

[Ngl, a stepsibling romance? I’m not mad about it. Actually, I’m kinda here for it hehe.]

[Relax, it’s still early. The ML hasn’t even met the FL yet, so obviously he’s just using the stepsister to deal with his heat cycles. Once he meets the FL and it’s love at first sight, we’ll see who really has his heart!]

Based on the comments floating in front of me, I’d somehow realized my world was actually an interstellar romance novel. A power-couple story.

Alden was the male lead, captain of the Empire’s top mech team.

The female lead was Tessa Voss, one of the military academy’s best graduates this year.

Stellar record. And her one dream was to join Alden’s team.

Her interview was supposed to be yesterday.

But I’d called Alden at the last minute, so it got pushed to today.

The résumé in my hands was hers.

Two photos in the upper right corner. One showed her in her fox form, sleek and proud, chin tilted up. The other was a girl in a crisp military uniform, hair pulled into a high ponytail, with beautiful fox eyes that looked calm and sharp.

The trash can was right next to me.

If I slipped the résumé in, Alden would never notice.

Even if he saw me do it, he wouldn’t care.

When I asked to come to his office, he’d handed me a whole stack of résumés to flip through for fun.

He had kissed my ear and told me to toss out anyone I didn’t like. Never mind that I knew absolutely nothing about mechs.

Geniuses were everywhere in the interstellar age.

Talented candidates were practically infinite.

Only one in a hundred would make the cut, and luck mattered more than skill.

I turned the page.

Reaction speed, SSS+. Agility, SSS+. Combat strength, SSS+.

…

Every other applicant had at least one or two flaws in their stats.

She had none.

And she was the only female shifter in the entire applicant pool.

Strong. Disciplined. Driven. Beautiful.

I didn’t need the reader comments to know Alden would fall for her the second they met.

“Baby, what’s got you so focused over here?”

Alden had just finished his work.

He swiveled his chair and looped an arm around my waist like it was the most natural thing in the world.

He barely glanced at the résumé.

“Don’t like her? Toss it.”

“No.”

“This one…”

“She’s actually really impressive.”

“You should see this, Alden.”

I pressed the résumé into his hands.

“My baby likes her?” He kissed my rabbit ear again.

Ever since yesterday, something in him had loosened.

He was more open with his affection.

He’d started calling me ‘baby.’

A little clingy, for him.

But once he and the female lead met, all of this would disappear.

“Yeah.”

“Tessa looks incredible, honestly.”

“I want to meet her.”

Alden called his secretary. “Send Tessa in first.”

Before the door opened, I shifted into my rabbit form and curled up in Alden’s arms.

[AHHH the ML and FL are finally in the same room!! They both look so cool I’m DYING. The chemistry is literally jumping off the screen, they’re PERFECT together!]

[The stepsister though… her little rabbit eyes are filling up with tears. Kinda breaks my heart.]

[…But she’s not the FL, so.]
