My Doctor Husband Made Me Book Appointments, So I Booked Our Divorce Chapter 08

For a few seconds, his words left me speechless.

He was so sure of himself.

So sure he could make a claim like that without a second thought.

I set down the scrub pad and shook my head. “Evan, I mean it. I don’t love you anymore, and I’m getting divorced.”

Leaving him stunned, I turned and walked out of the kitchen.

As we were leaving Dad’s house, he gave Evan a bunch of cfgars and liquor his coworkers had brought him.

Evan glanced at me and took the gifts without protest.

Before we left, Dad pulled me into a corner.

“Claire, married couples fight. You can’t threaten divorce every time something goes wrong.”

“I asked Evan. There’s nothing going on between him and that assistant at work.”

“Listen to your dad. Stop making a scene.”

I nodded but didn’t speak.

On the drive home, Max fell asleep.

“Take Max to your parents’ house. I’ve booked movers for tonight.”

The car drifted slightly.

Evan turned to glance at me, looking exasperated.

“Stop making a scene, Claire.”

There it was again. Stop making a scene.

After everything that had brought us to this point, why was I still the one making a scene?

“Last month, Max had a fever of 104. I called you, but I couldn’t get through. Brooke said you

were in surgery. Then I saw her Instagram post. The two of you were out having a late dinner.”

“On Father’s Day, I asked you to get my dad a gift. I don’t know whether you really forgot or just pretended to, but you didn’t even get him a box of cigars.”

“But you had no trouble remembering Brooke’s birthday present. A diamond necklace? I found the receipt in your pocket while I was doing the laundry.”

“You became chief at the beginning of the year, but you kept using that promotion as an

excuse to keep your distance and brush me off.”

“Meanwhile, Brooke used your position to get herself this year’s Employee of the Year award.”

I took a deep breath.

I hated sounding like a bitter wife all over again.

“Evan, things like this have happened more times than I can count these past few years. Do

you want me to go on?”

Evan’s brows drew together. I’d left him with nothing to say.

After a long silence, he sighed.

“Claire, Brooke did some of those things on her own. I honestly didn’t know.”

“I was waiting until I’d settled into the position to tell you. I didn’t mean to keep it from you.”

“I’ve already had Brooke transferred.”

That last part surprised me a little.

I’d complained about Brooke more than once.

Every time, Evan insisted I was being jealous for no reason. Brooke only wanted what was best

for him, he’d say, and I needed to stop imagining things.

Every time, we ended up in a bitter fight over that woman.

Now he was finally willing to have her transferred.

But it was too late.

“I’ve already rented a place. I’m moving today.”

“You can’t look after Max on your own. Turn here and take him to your parents.”

I pointed to the intersection where he needed to turn right and repeated myself.

Evan slammed on the brakes and turned to glare at me.

“Claire, why are you so impossible to reason with?”

“You’re his mother. How can you just dump him on my parents?”

His face flushed with anger. Every word was an accusation.

“Evan, am I his only parent?”

“You’re his father. Aren’t you responsible for him, too?”
