As the negotiations dragged on at a standstill, Ellie came looking for me.

She’d tracked down my hotel through various contacts and cornered me in the lobby.

The arrogant girl who’d always called me petty three years earlier now looked worn out.

She wore last season’s clothes and carried a scuffed bag.

“Claire…” she said timidly, her eyes immediately reddening.

I sat in the lobby’s coffee bar without inviting her to join me.

I held my coffee and regarded her coldly.

“What do you want?”

Ellie wiped away a tear, her voice catching.

“Claire, I came to apologize. I was immature back then. Chloe fooled me.”

She started frantically pouring out her complaints.

After I left, apparently, Chloe had stopped hiding how manipulative she was.

She’d played both Nathan and Mason to her advantage and kept finding excuses to spend

Ellie’s money.

“She tore my family apart. My brother almost cut off our dad because of her. She’s a leech!”

Ellie sobbed, tears and snot running down her face.

“Claire, will you forgive me? Come back and do something about my brother and Nathan. Because of Chloe, their companies are practically bankrupt.”

Her tearful accusations almost made me laugh.

I set down my coffee cup with a sharp clink.

“Ellie Carter, you didn’t come here because you’re sorry for what you did to me.”

I cut straight through her excuses.

“You came because Chloe’s casting you now. Things aren’t going your way anymore, so you Want someone to help you take her on.”

Ellie’s expression froze, tears caught on her lashes.

“That’s not why…” she protested, sounding guilty.

“Yes, it is,” I cut in.

“Why wasn’t she a leech when you took my music box to get on her good side? You were used

to stepping on me so you could feel superior in that little group.”

I stood, looking down at her.

“Now you’re paying for it, and you want me to save you? Dream on.”

I called over the lobby manager.

“Throw her out. Don’t let her dirty the carpet,” I told security.

That evening, Nathan did something that surprised everyone.

To show me how serious he was, he fired Chloe from her cushy position at a senior

management meeting.

Then he posted a long public apology on Facebook.

It detailed how Chloe had spent years driving wedges between us and pretending to be sick to

get sympathy.

He cut ties with Chloe completely. He also listed every bit of money and property she’d taken

from him over the past three years, preparing to sue to get it back.

That Facebook post destroyed Chloe’s reputation in their circle.

Everyone was laughing at her.

Late that night, Lauren reported what had happened.

All I said was a flat “Oh.”

Nathan thought this would make me change my mind about him.

He didn’t understand at all.

Love that came too late was worthless. So was justice that came too late.
