He Came With a Ring. I Had a Fiancé Chapter 04

Dylan didn’t answer.

His gaze flickered to my forehead. Then he turned away to find the first-aid kit.

He sat me down, wiped away the blood, and applied medication to the cut. His voice held no warmth at all.

“What difference does it make?”

“Claire cares too much about your friendship to get back together with me anyway.”

“And I promised her I’d marry you and take care of you for the rest of my life.”

“Isn’t that enough?”

I stared at him.

So I was supposed to spend my life pretending I couldn’t see the two of them flirting right in front of me?

He moved carefully, as though afraid of hurting me. But the moment the medicated powder touched the cut, pain shot through me.

When I finally spoke, my voice was rough and hoarse.

“No.”

“Because it disgusts me.”

Because a man like him didn’t deserve my love.

His hand froze in midair. For a moment, his expression went blank.

Claire tried to speak, but Dylan put a hand on her to stop her before she could say anything.

“The more you indulge her, the worse she gets!”

He sprang to his feet with a derisive snort and looked down at me.

“Audrey Bennett, if Claire and I really wanted to be together, do you think you’d even get the chance to sit here throwing a tantrum like some spoiled princess?”

“You want to break up? Fine.”

“Let’s see how long you last this time!”

With that, he grabbed Claire and walked out.

The door slammed behind them.

I remembered the last time I’d asked to break up. Dylan had transferred six hundred miles away.

For six months, he hadn’t answered my messages or picked up my calls.

I’d taken time off work specifically to find him, and he’d slept at the office just to avoid seeing me.

I’d swallowed my pride and begged for forgiveness, but none of it carried as much weight as one sentence from Claire.

“For my sake, okay?”

I wiped away tears that had already dried on my cheeks.

He’d simply never loved me. That was all.

Dylan, this time I finally knew how to let go.

I went back into the bedroom, finished packing, and took two suitcases to the airport.

As I waited for my flight, notifications kept appearing on Instagram.

Dylan and Claire were taking turns posting.

He’d taken her to Westhaven Tower, the landmark I’d been talking about visiting for ages. They posed for romantic photos together on the observation wheel, high above the city.

They leaped together from a towering bungee-jumping platform, holding each other tight. Then they went to a panoramic revolving restaurant, where every picture seemed devoted to Claire’s every smile and gesture.

Claire wrote: [Thanks to a certain someone, I finally got the promises that were never fulfilled back then.]

Dylan wrote: [And thank you to someone for helping me make up for something I missed out on when I was younger.]

I scrolled through the pictures, liked each one, and then blocked them both.

I boarded my plane without looking back.

A month later, Dylan arrived at my old apartment complex with his parents. Claire followed beside them, smiling gently.

“Once Audrey sees your parents, she’ll understand you’re serious about marrying her. She’ll have to get over being upset eventually.”

“Oh, and you brought the ring, right? Don’t mess up the proposal.”

Dylan felt his pocket and relaxed when he found it. Then he rang the doorbell.

No matter how many times he pressed it, no one answered.

His impatience slowly showed.

Finally, a neighbor poked her head out and recognized him.

“Stop knocking. No one’s home.”

“Your girlfriend moved out a month ago. Didn’t you know?”
