He Gave His Assistant My Promotion, So I Left Him Forever Chapter 01

He Gave His Assistant My Promotion, So I Left Him Forever Chapter 01

My supervisor stopped me on my way out.

“Adrian said he’d marry you once you made director. You’re one step away. Why quit now?”

I looked down at my pant cuffs, dark and heavy with rainwater.

“Over an umbrella.”

Yesterday, the rain had come down hard.

I’d forgotten mine and got stuck under the awning outside the office.

Camille Reeves, Adrian Bennett’s new assistant, was stuck there too.

Adrian came down with one umbrella. He didn’t even hesitate. He walked straight to Camille.

He barely glanced at me. “Our situation is sensitive, Elena. Let’s not start rumors over an umbrella.”

I watched them walk away together. I stood there longer than I should have.

Then I plunged into the rain and didn’t look back.

Ten years with Adrian, and the line I heard most was some version of we need to keep our distance.

So I commuted alone.

Promotions went to other people.

And now, even standing under the same umbrella was too much to ask.

With my exit paperwork finalized, outside, a thin rain was still falling.

This time, I walked out under my own umbrella.

Adrian, I’m done waiting for you to tilt yours toward me.

The rain had eased by the time I left the building.

I closed my umbrella, and there they were. Adrian and Camille, in the café across the street, eating together.

He was smiling. Not the tight, professional expression I knew. A real smile, soft around the edges, like he’d forgotten anyone could see him.

Something in my chest cracked open.

I couldn’t remember the last time he’d looked like that around me.

Before I could look away, Adrian stepped out of the café and walked straight toward me.

His face had already reset.

“We got caught in the rain on the way back from a client. Figured we’d grab something quick.”

“Why did you run out into that downpour yesterday?”

“You’re about to make director. Last thing you need is to get sick.”

Camille caught up to him then.

The second he saw her, he stepped away from me. Reflex.

“I should head back to the office,” he muttered.

He didn’t wait for me to answer. He just turned and left with her.

Of course. Couldn’t let anyone see us together.

That was the deal. We were together, so at work we were nothing. No collaborating, no commuting, no standing too close.

I’d spent years watching him walk away like that. Always with someone else. Always with his back to me.

The only difference now was that I was done standing still.

Back home, I pulled my resignation confirmation out of my bag and left it on the coffee table.

I wanted to be sitting there when he got home. I wanted to say it to his face.

Adrian came home with grocery bags.

He tied on his apron and went straight to the kitchen without a word.

He didn’t notice me until the food was on the table.

“Didn’t hear you come in. Dinner’s ready.”

The only sound was forks against plates.

I couldn’t remember when we’d run out of things to say.

The distance we performed at work had followed us home and made itself permanent.

We used to be the couple everyone envied.

Now we sat across from each other with nothing to say.

The last real conversation we’d had was about the associate director promotion. The one where Camille and I were both up for it.

I got the position. Camille didn’t.

And the moment the results were announced, Adrian stood up in front of the entire leadership team and argued for her.

He said the process wasn’t fair.

He talked about how talented she was, how hard she worked, how she deserved that title more than anyone.

My boyfriend, in a room full of executives, campaigning for the woman I’d just beaten. Whatever joy I’d felt about the promotion died right there.

That night, I finally let it spill. Every hurt I’d been swallowing.

He didn’t even blink.

“I wasn’t playing favorites, Elena. Camille earned it. She’s good at what she does, and she deserved that spot just as much.”

“Besides, you and I both know I have to be careful. People are already watching.”

I never said Camille wasn’t talented. But I’d earned that promotion too.

He looked at me like I was a colleague filing a complaint. And for the first time, I didn’t have the energy to fight him on it.

After that, we talked less. The silence between us spread like something living.

Then Camille transferred to his department. Executive assistant. On paper, it looked like a lateral move. In practice, it was a backdoor promotion just to keep her by his side.

Adrian got credit for being principled. Camille got everyone’s sympathy.

And I got to be the woman who won on paper and lost everywhere else, with no one to tell about it.

Even now, it burned.

For the girl who’d swallowed all of it. For the ten years I’d never get back.

After dinner, Adrian stood up from the table.

One cooked, the other cleaned. That was our deal since we’d moved in.

I swallowed hard and called after him.

“Adrian. Sit down. I need to talk to you.”
