After My Husband Left Me Alone with a Brain Injury I Stopped Waiting for Him to Come Back Chapter 07

Back then, after Meredith intercepted the letters Emerson had written to me, she tried to copy my handwriting and tone, hoping to keep the correspondence going under my name.

But he saw through it immediately and cut off contact.

Unwilling to accept it, Meredith went all the way to the rehab center where Emerson was recovering, trying to see him in person.

He refused again and again, avoided her completely, and eventually disappeared by moving somewhere no one could track down.

Most people would’ve let it go at that point.

But not her.

Every day, she kept rereading the old letters he’d written to me, turning them over like they belonged to her, almost obsessed.

Our family always gave her whatever she wanted. They were just as drawn to the Schultz family’s power and status, and they had thought more than once about marrying her into it.

But a few years later, Emerson left the country to study medicine, and that hope finally died.

I only learned later that she’d already fallen for him before she ever took those letters from me.

Maybe what I said hit too close, because Denzel’s eyes turned red as he lost control. “If you ever did that, I’d kill him!”

The words came out before he could stop them. Then, he seemed to realize how ridiculous he sounded, his face paling.

I let out a cold laugh. “See? He’s done nothing to you. He’s just been better than you all these years, and you’re ready to go to war over it.

“You know exactly what Meredith has done to me, and you still expect me to tolerate her.

“Denzel, tell me. Am I the one being petty, or are you just that shameless?”

When I confronted him, he had no answer.

He avoided my eyes and just grabbed me harder, trying to drag me back with him.

I refused. I shoved him, hit him, and even bit him.

He ignored it all, endured the pain, and forced me back inside.

Once the door shut, he gripped my shoulders tightly. “Don’t be stupid. If you leave me, where do you think you’ll go? I may love Merrie, but after all these years, I still care about you. I never planned to get rid of you!”

I said calmly, “But I don’t want you anymore.”

He stared at me, something dawning in his eyes. His whole body went rigid.

Then, suddenly, he shoved me down onto the bed, stubbornly trying to pull at my clothes.

“Are you acting like this because you lost the baby, and I’ve slept with Merrie a few times?

“I’ll give you another child. That way, you won’t be thinking like this. Don’t you want me? That’s impossible!”

Struggling, my hand found the candlestick beside me. I swung it at him with all my strength.

Denzel cried out and covered his face, stumbling back as blood seeped through his fingers.

Shocked and furious, he shouted, “Caitlin, have you lost your mind?”

I gripped the bloodstained candlestick in my hand, smiling in a way that even I knew looked unhinged.

“If you don’t divorce me, you’ll never sleep in peace again.

“Otherwise, I have plenty of ways to make sure we both go down together!”
