I Pretended to Be Dead and They All Panicked Chapter 05

A terrified scream ripped through the crowd.

“Someone jumped!”

People immediately rushed toward the scene, forming a tight circle around the body.

At first, my parents seemed too stunned to

process what they were seeing.

Then Mom spotted the bracelet around my wrist.

Her legs gave out beneath her.

It was the bracelet she had put on me herself the night before. She had told me it was a family heirloom passed down from my grandmother, something precious enough that she had never even been willing to wear it herself.

“Cordelia, please, don’t do this to Mom!” she sobbed, throwing herself over me. “Somebody help! Please, save my daughter!”

Dad was already frantically making phone calls.

“Get the best doctors from every top hospital in

Viremont here! I don’t care what it takes. Now!”

I was rushed into the operating room, where the

doctors immediately began emergency treatment.

Dad stood outside with bloodshot eyes. He

slammed his fist against the wall.

“Why… Why would Cordelia suddenly jump?” His

voice cracked. “Did we push her too far? Was

everything we said to her just too much?”

Evangeline’s heart pounded with guilt, but she still

forced herself to speak.

“Maybe Cordelia realized her fake death had been

exposed and decided to actually jump this time

just to threaten you. Mom, Dad, please don’t fall

for it.”

She took a breath before adding fuel to the fire.

“Even if Cordelia survives, she still needs to be

punished. Otherwise, she’ll keep threatening to kill

herself every time she doesn’t get her way. How

are you supposed to control her then?”

Dad frowned, lost in thought.

After a moment, he said slowly, “I suppose that’s

possible.”

He didn’t want to believe the worst about his own

daughter.

But after everything Cordelia had done before, he

couldn’t completely rule it out.

Several hours later, the operating room doors

finally opened.

“Doctor, how is my daughter?” Mom rushed

forward, her voice trembling.

The doctor removed his mask.

“She’ll be fine. She had a minor brain hemorrhage,

but we’ve taken care of it. The building wasn’t particularly tall, so thankfully she didn’t suffer any

major injuries.”

A bodyguard who had gone upstairs to inspect my

hospital room hurried back with his report.

“Mr. Sinclair, the window in Miss Cordelia’s room

was opened from the inside. There were no signs

of forced entry or external damage. We’ve ruled

out the possibility that someone pushed her.”

The news seemed to confirm everything

Evangeline had suggested.

My parents‘ expressions immediately hardened.

“She’ll stop at nothing to get our attention,” Dad

said through clenched teeth. “I think we should

send Cordelia to a strict residential school. She

needs to learn some discipline before her behavior becomes a liability to this family.”

Mom, who had originally planned to stay by my bedside, looked equally disappointed.

“Let’s go home. I’ll have Martha stay here and take

care of her.”

Just as they were about to leave, Julian hurried

into the hospital.

“How’s Cordelia?” he demanded, clearly frantic.

Evangeline suppressed the smile tugging at the corners of her lips and answered sweetly.

“Julian, don’t worry. Cordelia only jumped to put on a show. She’s completely fine. Honestly, I think you

should stop indulging her, too. If everyone keeps

giving in to her, she’ll only become more spoiled

and impossible to control.”

But Julian’s next words left everyone in the room

frozen.

“What are you talking about?”

He stared at them in disbelief.

“Cordelia has severe depression. She’s attempted

suicide dozens of times over the past ten years.”
