In A Wheelchair, They Still Can Only Look Up to Me Chapter 04

In A Wheelchair, They Still Can Only Look Up to Me Chapter 04

A cold, unfamiliar male voice came through the

receiver. “Hello, are you a family member of Isolde

Vale? This is the Emergency Room at the Northern

Federation Special Research Personnel Transfer

Center.”

“Isolde has developed a severe infection due to

improper care of her bone marrow puncture

wound. We’ve issued a critical condition alert.”

“What?”

Selene’s face went pale in an instant. The phone

nearly slipped from her hand.

“What kind of joke is this? She’s the healthiest kid

in our family!”

“I’m only calling to notify you. I’m not obligated to

answer your questions,” the man said coldly.

“Under special policy, her records have been

moved to classified files. Under the law, she no

longer holds any relation to any of you.”

“What? How dare you take my child away?” Selene

shot to her feet.

But the man had already hung up.

Evren stood frozen, his lips trembling

uncontrollably. “Septic shock. Critical condition.”

Garrick stared at the handwritten letter on the

table. It read,

[Forget about me. I’m going somewhere far away.

I’m not your family anymore.]

His legs gave out, he only stayed upright by

gripping the edge of the table.

He slammed his phone down on the table and

forced a cold, brittle laugh.

“This is all just a stunt! She’s always been clever,

and she’s got plenty of friends! Getting someone

to pretend to be federal staff would be easy for

her!”

“Walk away from the Vale family? She couldn’t

even make it past the gate, how could she

possibly walk away?”

Selene’s face was ashen. She stared hard at the

trail of blood smeared by the rain outside the front

gate, her voice trembling beyond her control.

“But the blood out there…”

“That’s chicken blood she planted! Or she just

scratched herself somewhere to freak us out!”

Garrick tried to mask the panic in his eyes with

arrogance.

“She’s always been independent and tough. She

barely even catches a cold. How could a little

bone marrow extraction cause a severe infection?”

“Septic shock? Critical condition? That’s

ridiculous!”

Evren picked up the apple that had fallen on the

floor, hurled it into the trash can, and echoed

through gritted teeth.

“Dad’s right. She saw us taking Maelis to the

bonfire party today and cooked this whole thing

up just to mess with us.”

Selene took a deep breath and forced down the

rising panic. Her wolf paced restlessly at the edge

of her consciousness.

“Fine. If she wants to play hardball, then let’s just

ignore her!”

The family reached a consensus. No one called the police. No one went to the medical center to

look for Isolde.

But life didn’t return to the peace they’d expected.

In just three days, the order in their household

began to unravel completely.

At dinner, Selene had barely taken one spoonful of

the shellfish chowder Maelis had so proudly

brought to her when she suddenly dropped her

spoon, clawed at her neck, and turned purple in

the face.

“Mom! What’s wrong with you?”

Evren jumped up in terror.

Selene gasped for air.

“Allergy… the firstaid kit… get the antihistamine.”

Maelis stumbled frantically toward the first–aid

cabinet in the living room, rummaged through it

for what felt like forever, and came running back.

with a bottle in her hand.

“Mom, take this! It’s for allergies!”

Evren snatched the bottle from her, checked the

label and date, and exploded with rage. “Maelis,

are you blind? This expired a year ago!”

Maelis burst into tears and backed away in

distress.

“Isolde used to handle all of this for every meal!

She never let me set foot in the kitchen. How was I

supposed to know where the medicine was kept.”

Selene collapsed back into her chair.

Her vision blurred from the lack of oxygen.

It hit her then, every single meal before, Isolde had

always meticulously avoided her allergens. The

moment she coughed or showed any sign of

discomfort, Isolde would have warm water and an

epinephrine pen at her fingertips within seconds.

She thought to herself, Isolde had been as caring

as her own flesh and blood.

And now, her actual biological daughter didn’t

even know her dietary restrictions, let alone where

the emergency medicines were kept.

Selene was rushed to the Pack Medical Center ER

that very night.

At the same time, Garrick’s corporation was struck

by a disaster of its own.

“Mr. Garrick! That multi–million dollar contract with

Cragstone Group, the core dateset are all coming

back with errors!”
