He Said It Was A Bet, I Made It His Last One Chapter 07

Only a tiny section of the shoe rack was empty. The much larger section used by Callum and Tamsin was

still packed full.

My side of the bedroom closet had been cleared out.

Several of Tamsin’s silk nightgowns were still hanging on his side of the closet.

The decorations I’d bought, the framed prints I’d picked out, the little pieces that had once made the

apartment feel like home were all gone too.

Before they got back, I’d cleared out every trace of myself.

Callum messaged every coworker and friend of mine he could think of.

No one knew where I’d gone.

“She really left.”

He sank onto the couch.

“She’s not coming back.”

Tamsin, on the other hand, couldn’t hide her smile.

“So what?”

She sat beside him.

“You still have me.”

Then she smiled wider.

“Besides, we’re married. We’re the real family.”

Callum lifted his head.

“We’re not family.”

Her smile froze.

“The certificate is fake.”

Her face went blank.

“What?”

“I had someone make a fake one.”

Tamsin stared at him.

“You’re joking.”

“You told Maren it was real.”

Her voice sharpened.

“Why would you lie to her?”

Callum didn’t look up.

“Because you were standing right there.”

“If I’d admitted it was fake, you would’ve started another fight.”

His voice was cold.

“I was going to find the right time to tell Maren the truth.”

“But she left before I could.”

The color drained from Tamsin’s face.

Callum finally looked up at her.

“You went to Maren’s office on purpose today, didn’t you?”

“You promised me before we made those fake documents that you’d stop pulling stunts like that.”

Tamsin looked away. “I didn’t go there on purpose.”

“You’re still lying?”

His voice hardened.

Her eyes immediately filled with tears.

“I was just nearby!”

“My friends kept egging me on, and I got carried away.”

She sniffled.

“How was I supposed to know Maren would suddenly get so dramatic and call the police?”

Callum’s face hardened.

Tamsin started crying harder.

“And you’re the one who told everyone she was your mistress!”

“So why are you yelling at me now?”

Callum had no answer.

He was silent for a long moment before finally speaking.

“Brennan asked me to take care of you before he died.”

“I’ve done that for fifteen years.”

He sounded exhausted.

“That’s long enough.”

“I’ve repaid what I owed him.”

“From now on, you’re on your own.”

Tamsin begged and cried, but this time Callum didn’t give in.

Outside, night had already fallen.

Usually by then, I would’ve been home, exhausted and complaining about every ridiculous thing that had

happened at work.

That night, the apartment stayed silent.

Then someone knocked.

Callum nearly tripped over himself rushing to the door.

“Maren…”

But when he opened it, two police officers stood outside.

“Mr. Rourke?”

One of the officers spoke.

“The disputed funds still haven’t been returned. We need you to come with us so we can follow up on the

complaint.”

“I’ll return it!”

Callum pulled out his phone.

“I’ll transfer it right now.”

Then he stopped.

“Can I ask you something first?”
