He Said It Was A Bet, I Made It His Last One Chapter 03

I didn’t go after them.

I tried to order a rideshare, but the area was too far out, and after twenty minutes no driver had accepted the request.

The midday heat made me dizzy.

Then Callum’s car pulled up in front of me.

“Get in. You’re not going to find a ride out here.”

I didn’t move.

“Come on. It’s too hot to stand outside.”

He got out and opened the passenger door for me.

Callum used to insist that the front seat was mine whenever we drove together.

With the sun beating down on me, I finally got in.

The second I raised the temperature, Callum turned it back down at the next light.

“Tamsin gets hot easily. If it’s too warm, she’ll start sweating.”

He remembered that Tamsin hated the heat.

He’d forgotten that I was on my period.

Cold air blasted across my hands and feet.

The seat was uncomfortable too, so I reached down to adjust it.

Tamsin stopped me from the back seat.

“Don’t.”

She leaned forward between the seats.

“I’m only letting you sit there today. If you move the seat, I’ll just have to readjust it next time.”

I looked at Callum.

“You told me to get in.”

He kept his eyes on the road.

“Tamsin gets carsick. She can’t drive herself, and she’s used to sitting up front.”

“She’s only sitting in the back today because she wants to rest.”

He paused.

“You’re only sitting there this once. Just deal with it.”

I pressed my lips together and left the seat alone.

By the time my cramps got worse and my hands were freezing, Callum reached into the compartment beside me and pulled out a blanket.

“If you’re cold, use this.”

For one stupid second, I thought he still cared.

I reached for it.

Then Tamsin spoke from the back seat.

“Callum, I’m cold too.”

He didn’t hesitate.

He turned around and handed her the blanket.

“I told you not to wear such a short dress. Now you’re cold?”

Tamsin grinned at him.

“But you’re here.”

She smiled.

“You’d never let me freeze.”

“You always have an excuse.”

Callum turned back around and finally noticed my outstretched hand.

“The blanket belongs to Tamsin. She bought it and keeps it in the car.”

“If you’re cold, you can buy one to leave in here too.”

I lowered my hand.

“No need.”

I had no one to blame but myself.

I’d gotten into the car because one old memory about the passenger seat had gotten to me.

My mistake. I wouldn’t make it again.

By the end of the ninety-minute drive, my hands and feet were nearly numb.

When I stepped out, the heat I’d hated earlier actually felt comforting.

Callum carefully opened the back door and held a hand over Tamsin’s head so she wouldn’t hit it as she got out.

Only then did I realize we’d stopped in front of a restaurant.

“I want to go home.”

Callum turned to me.

“Don’t start.”

“You rushed out this morning. You must be hungry.”

“Tamsin said this buffet was good and asked me to go back for you.”

He frowned.

“Don’t be ungrateful.”

My stomach was already aching with hunger, so I didn’t argue.

Fine.

I’d just sit somewhere else.

Instead, Callum and Tamsin followed me and sat directly across from me.

“We came together. There’s no reason to sit separately.”

Tamsin raised an eyebrow.

“What, Maren? You can’t stand looking at us?”

Neither of them lowered their voices.

People at the surrounding tables looked over.

I didn’t want another scene, so I stopped arguing.

A few bites into my beef, my face started itching.

Then Tamsin suddenly pointed at me and burst out laughing.

“Look at her face!”

She laughed so hard she nearly doubled over.

“She looks like some ugly old toad.”
