He Booked the Hotel Before He Asked Me Chapter 06

He Booked the Hotel Before He Asked Me Chapter 06

He didn’t answer.

That’s how I knew.

For eleven weeks I had told a story about the worst day of my life. I’d told it

to my mother, to Dorothy, to the couples group, to strangers at the pharmacy.

Nathan collapsed at a job site out in Weller County. A subcontractor found

him. The paramedics said eight more minutes and I’d be a widow.

I’d said “a subcontractor found him” maybe two hundred times.

Standing on my porch on a Sunday morning, watching my husband’s face, I

understood that I had never once asked for that subcontractor’s name.

“Say it,” I said.

“Claire, this doesn’t change-”

“Say it.”

He put his hand on the porch rail. “I was in a hotel,” he said. “Room 412.

The Belmont.”

“With Jenna.”

“Yes.”

“And who called 911?”

He looked at his shoes.

“She did,” he said. “From the room phone. And then she- she couldn’t be

there when they came, Claire, you have to understand what that would have

“She left you.”

“She waited in the parking lot until she saw the ambulance.”

I laughed. I actually laughed out loud, standing on my grandmother’s porch in

a bathrobe at ten thirty in the morning, because it was so enormous.

My best friend watched my husband go into cardiac arrest, dialed the front

desk, put on her shoes, and left him on the floor of room 412 so she wouldn’t

have to answer questions. Then she drove to the hospital as à concerned

family friend, sat down beside me in that waiting room, took my hand, and

refilled my water bottle every hour for nine hours.

She helped me pick out which pajamas to bring him.

She cried with me.

She told the nurses she was “basically his sister.”

“How did I get the call?” I asked. My voice was very quiet now.

“The hotel manager. I’d checked in under my own name.”

“And the job site story?”

“I told you that in the ICU,” he said. “I was on morphine. I was terrified. And

then- then it was told, and I couldn’t untell it.”

“You had eleven weeks.”

“I know.”

“I slept in a chair for four days.”

“I know.”

“I fed you. I washed you. I lifted you off the toilet at three in the morning,

Nathan, and you cried and I told you that you were safe.” My hands were

shaking now. “And every one of those days you knew that the last person

who touched you before your heart stopped was my best friend, and that she

walked out and left you on a hotel carpet.”

He said nothing.

“And then in September you stood in my kitchen and told me I liked you

better sick.”

“That was cruel,” he whispered. “I’m sorry. Claire, I’m so sorry, I’ve been-

I’ve been sick with this, I haven’t slept, I was going to tell you-”

“You were going to tell me after one more night.”

He didn’t deny it.

I want to describe what I felt, and the truth is that what I felt was nothing

like heartbreak.

It was disgust.

Not at her. Not even, in that moment, at the sex.

At the smallness of it. This man had been handed a second life by a

surgeon he never even met, and the first thing he did with it – the very first

—

thing was arrange a logistics plan to spend one more night in the same

hotel chain where he’d nearly died, with the woman who’d left him for dead,

and to bill it to a company I built out of a storage unit at twenty-six.

That was his mortality epiphany. That was his Patagonia.

“Take your boxes,” said.

“Where am I supposed to go?”

“You told me you’d never see her again,” I said. “Sol assume she has a

couch.”

I shut the door. Locked it. Slid down the back of it and sat on the floor of

my own entryway while he called my name for eleven more minutes.

When his car finally pulled away, I got up, and my phone was buzzing on

the counter.

Twenty-two missed calls.

All from Jenna.

And one text, sent four minutes earlier:

Jenna: Claire please pick up. It’s not what he’s telling you. I’m begging you.

Before you talk to Marcus – please, please call me first.

Marcus.

Her husband.

I picked up my phone, and I did not call Jenna.
