I Sent Away Every Woman He Loved Until I Became the One Who Left Chapter 19

Who are you, who am I, who is he.”

His voice came out hoarse. “You never told anyone the answers to those three questions.”

Meredith laughed.

“I asked every woman who came.”

“They all had different answers. You’re the washed-up wife, I’m the favored new love. Or you’re the old one, I’m the new one. You’re the one who should be forgotten, I’m the one who

should be remembered. I heard it all.”

“I worked to make myself stop hoping. To stop depending on you.”

“Now…” Her laugh came out clean. “I’ve done it.”

She left.

Grant lowered his head. His shoulders slowly caved.

He knew the answers now. But there was no longer any version of the answer that included

him.

Three days later, the divorce was finalized.

Outside the courthouse, a white car waited across the street.

Jessica waved. “Over here.”

As soon as I got in, Jessica handed me a bag with iced coffee. “All done?”

“Yeah, Done.”

I took the coffee. The cold cup chilled my palm.

Jessica started the car and glanced at me with a knowing smile.

“Since it’s done, I have something to ask you. Want to consider my brother? He’s been crazy

about you for a long time.”

I was mid-sip and nearly choked.

I coughed twice. “Are you kidding?”

“What kidding?” Jessica’s tone was half serious. “You know my brother’s personality. Quiet, doesn’t say much. But you asked him to handle a divorce and how fast did he get it done?”

“A man like that, if you don’t grab him now, don’t regret it when someone else does.”

I smiled down at my coffee and didn’t answer.

I never took jokes like that seriously.

But this time Jessica brought up things I didn’t know.

“You remember how we met?”

“Yeah.” I nodded. “Your brother handled my parents’ case. I was falling apart. He was afraid to leave me alone, so he took me to your place. That’s how I met you.”

“Right.” Jessica nodded. “He had his eye on you even then.”

“What?”

“I warned him. I said, ‘Daniel, don’t go digging around a married woman’s fence. She has a husband.””

I was stunned. Didn’t know what to say.

Jessica’s tone turned serious.

“Merry, don’t reject him right away. My brother’s a quiet one, but he’s been in a great mood lately. Yesterday he was humming and mopping the floor in the hallway at the firm. The cleaning lady chased him asking if he’d lost his mind.”

“Let him hold onto the fantasy a few more days. You think about it too.”

“All these years, watching you try to live, I think… it’s amazing when a person tries to break through.”

“You didn’t want to forget the seven years with Grant because you didn’t want to forget your own seven years. He was just one grain of sand in those years. Tearing everything down over him, that’s not fair to you,”

“That’s why you chose to hurt yourself to try to break the dependency.”

“You’re brave.”

“That man doesn’t deserve you.”

Outside the window, trees lined the street and receded one by one.

I held the coffee cup

“We’ll see,” I said. “I’m going to figure myself out first.”

Jessica didn’t push. She reached over and turned the music up a notch.

The car moved steadily through the afternoon streets.

Outside the window, the city was brightening bit by bit.

Something was growing again.
