Left Me to Drown for Her?I’m Done with All Three of You!Chapter 06

I spent the night at a hotel near Cedarfield Station.

By morning, the show’s official social media account had posted a staternent.

[Mara Whitfield has regrettably withdrawn from future filming for personal health reasons.]

No one in the comments knew what had happened.

Some decided I couldn’t handle being rejected. Others called me a sore loser.

A few claimed I’d quit at the show’s peak to steal attention from Tessa.

The top comment read:

[none of the four men wanted her, and she still won’t ask herself why?]

I stared at it for a few seconds, then closed the page.

The showrunner called soon after.

The production would waive most of the early–termination damages, but everything already

filmed would still air.

“We’re cutting the near–drowning footage,” he told me. “An on–set safety incident would

hurt the show.”

“Fine.”

Whatever version of me remained on their cameras no longer mattered.

After I got back to Lindenport, I went straight to Lindenport General Hospital.

The impact had bruised the soft tissue in my shoulder, and water in my lungs had caused a

mild infection. They admitted me for observation.

When the nurse asked for an emergency contact, I wrote down Brooke Sullivan, my college

roommate.

She stormed into my room thirty minutes later.

One look at my shoulder stopped her cold.

“Did you join a dating show or get put through hell?”

I almost smiled “I left.”

Brooke swore about Graham for ten straight minutes, brought me chicken noodle soup, picked up my prescriptions, and went to our apartment to pack my things.

Every room in the apartment Graham and I had rented for three years still carried traces of us.

Matching mugs. A wedding–planning binder. The condo savings plan taped to the refrigerator.

“Throw it all out?” Brooke asked.

I considered it. “Bring what’s mine. Leave the rest.”

Once I had truly decided to go, there was less to cut away than I’d imagined.

My clothes filled two suitcases. My books took three boxes.

I left the binder on the coffee table.

On the last page, Graham had written:

[No matter what happens, Mara is my first choice.]

The ink had faded.

So had the promise.

Graham finally came to the hospital on my third day there.

He stood in the doorway holding lilies. “Why didn’t you tell me you were admitted?”

“You were filming.”

“I could’ve taken time off.”

I closed my book over one finger. “Tessa can’t manage without you.”

He looked away first. “Tess had nightmares all night. I came as soon as she settled down. ”

Even after I nearly drowned, her nightmares came first.

Graham put the flowers down and reached for my forehead.

I turned my face away.

“My things are gone. I left my key on the entryway table.”

His hand stopped midair.

“Mara, why can’t you understand? Everything that happened on the show was work.”

“Was the river work too?”

He lowered his arm.

I placed our matching bracelet on the bedside table.

The silver charm tapped against the wood.

Graham stared at it, his eyes going red.

“Five years, and you’re throwing it away over one accident?”

“It wasn’t one accident.”

I folded my hands over the blanket.

“At our college graduation dinner, all of you left to celebrate Tessa’s birthday. You forgot me

at the restaurant.”

“When I had my appendix out, Nolan told you Tessa had been dumped. The three of you went

to her.”

“Last New Year’s Eve, we planned to watch fireworks from the overlook. Tessa said she was scared of the dark, so you drove away and left me there until after midnight.”

Graham wiped his palm on his jeans. “You said it was fine every time.”

“Because I thought if I stayed low–maintenance long enough, one day you’d put me first.”

“And now?”

“Now I almost died,” I said quietly.

He sat beside the bed and said nothing for a long time.

Before leaving, he didn’t take the bracelet. He only said, “I don’t accept this breakup. ”

I didn’t answer,

It took two people to begin a relationship.

It only took one to end it.

That night, the latest episode aired.

The production cut the moment I went overboard but forgot about the backup safety camera on the rescue kayak.

The final three seconds of the preview shook so hard the river became a gray blur.

Someone shouted off camera, “Where’s the other one?”

Then another voice cut through the water.

“Mara is gone!”
