You Only Loved The Version Of Me That Needed Nothing Chapter 12

Julian got there during the vows. He could see her face from where he stood at the edge of the lawn.

The sunlight caught her just right – white dress, soft glow,

the kind of beauty that didn’t beg for attention but held it

anyway.

He’d been with beautiful women before. Hazel had never been the most striking one in a room. But standing there, she was the only thing he could see.

“Arthur.” She spoke – and it wasn’t his name on her lips.

“I thought about this for so long, and I still don’t know what to say.” She laughed, a breathless, genuine sound. “I’ve never been good with words. I never knew how to let people in, and I never knew how to set boundaries when people hurt me.”

“But you taught me something.” Her voice cracked. “That I deserve to be loved right.”

“You showed me that my voice matters. That I’m allowed to be angry, to be messy, to fall apart – because you’ll be there to catch what I can’t carry.”

“Thank you.” Her breath shook. “Thank you for loving me.”

Her tears spilled over, and something under Julian’s ribs caved in. Every memory he had of her rushed in at once- and landed on that last night, three years ago.

He’d replayed that night a hundred times in three years. And

every time, he came to the same conclusion – he hadn’t done

anything wrong.

He’d told the truth. He hadn’t been cruel on purpose. How could one sentence burn five years to the ground?

Standing here, watching her marry someone else, he finally

understood. It was never about the sentence. It was about five

years of taking her for granted.

Hazel had been so easy to love that he forgot she needed to be

loved in return. She was so strong that he convinced himself

she didn’t need tenderness.

So every time she reached for him, he looked the other way.

He understood now. Too late. She was already standing beside

someone who’d figured out what Julian never had – and she didn’t need his regret anymore.

Julian drove his fist into the stone archway beside him. Skin

tore, and blood welled across his knuckles.

Not enough. A thousand broken bones wouldn’t come close to

what he owed her.
