With Arthur here, the wedding plans started falling into place fast. We’d go through the details in bed every night until I fell asleep and then I’d marry him all over again in my dreams. 

We’d booked a private estate for the ceremony. I leaned on the table and yawned. 

Across the lawn, Arthur was locked in with the venue coordinator. Chloe sat beside me and raised an eyebrow. 

“You’re really just letting your man handle everything?” 

“We went over it together last night.” 

The sun was perfect – warm, not blinding. I stretched out my hand, let the light gather in my palm, and tipped my face up 

into it. 

So this is what it felt like – having someone beside me to figure things out. We could disagree, then both soften enough 

to meet in the middle. 

I’d never had that before. 

“Why are you rubbing it in? I’m gonna get desperate and 

marry the next guy who makes eye contact.” 

I smiled. 

“No you won’t. You act tough, but the second you actually like 

someone, you run like hell.” 

“Get out.” 

Chloe shoved my shoulder and then paused, remembering 

something. 

“Oh Toby messaged me. He wanted to know what you’ve been doing.” She glanced at me. “Sounds like Julian put him 

up to it. Guess he’s getting nervous since you’ve been quiet.” 

“Are you sending him an invite?” 

Chloe scoffed. “If it were up to me, I’d deliver it myself. Let 

him see exactly how well you’re doing.” 

I laughed and shook my head. 

“We’re not kids anymore. What’s the point?” I looked at her. “If I invited Julian, he’d take it as proof he still mattered – like I’d marry someone else out of spite instead of going back 

to him.” 

“Isn’t it enough that I’m happy?” 

I squeezed Chloe’s wrist. I didn’t notice it myself – but the smile on my face was the softest it had been in years.
