When Julian first saw Ivy, she still wore those hacked-off bangs.

She was a slight little thing, huddled in a corner with her backpack clutched to her chest as she

cried.

He started toward her to see what was wrong, but the moment he moved, Ivy bolted like a

startled rabbit.

The next time he saw her, she was all claws and attitude, as if she’d become a different person,

and she had the nerve to propose a deal.

Whenever Julian thought back to that day, the whole thing felt like a scene from a ridiculous

soap opera.

Ordinarily, he never would’ve wasted time on something so pointless.

Between keeping up with school, preparing to study abroad, and learning how the company

operated, he already had more than enough on his plate.

Yet for some reason, he’d agreed to play along with her scheme.

Maybe it was because he’d never met anyone like her.

Julian often wondered about that.

How could someone like Ivy even exist?

She had nothing to fall back on, yet she ran one scheme after another without seeming to care

who would rescue her if one blew up in her face.

Ivy was neither naive nor kind. She calculated every gain and loss, lied without blinking when

she had to, and could hatch a new scheme in seconds.

But Ivy never struck first.

During yet another company meeting, he caught himself thinking about her and decided he’d let himself get sucked into this soap opera long enough.

So after leaving the country, he never contacted Ivy again.

As for why he’d kept the same number he had once given her, Julian had an explanation for

that too.

He couldn’t leave a frightened rabbit to fend for herself.

Ivy had no one else in her corner.

If she ever needed help, he wanted to make sure she could always reach him.
