Seven Years As His Wife… Until My Own Son Called Me A Homewrecker Chapter 03

For one long second, Adrian stared at the papers in disbelief.

As the silence dragged on, my breathing grew shallow. I was about to say something else when he let out a short, mocking laugh.

He took the agreement and signed without reading it. “Do you think waving divorce papers at me gives you leverage? You’re leaving this house whether I sign or not.”

I took the pages back, and for the first time in days, I felt lighter.

“All right. I’ll go.”

His smile vanished. He pressed two fingers to his temple, irritation flashing across his face as if he had expected me to beg.

Then Vanessa called from upstairs. “Adrian? Where are you?”

“Just getting water. I’m coming.” He turned so quickly that one slipper came off.

At the bend in the staircase, he finally remembered I was still outside.

“Stop playing games, Mia. Do you honestly think you can survive without me?”

I had married him right after college and had never held a job. Of course he believed I could not make it without the Blackwoods.

That did not make his contempt hurt any less.

I lowered my eyes and quietly closed the door between us.

Over the next few days, my attorney filed everything as an uncontested divorce. Once the mandatory waiting period ended, the court could issue the final decree.

I rented a tiny studio in a worn-down neighborhood. It was nothing like the estate, but it was clean and safe.

I sent out more than a dozen résumés. With no work experience, I did not get a single interview. With my savings running low, I signed up with a food-delivery app and started making deliveries.

The work was exhausting, but exhaustion left me no time to think about Adrian.

That was why seeing him again felt almost unreal.

“Mia?” His eyes narrowed. “What are you doing here?”

Vanessa emerged behind him, wrapped in a towel, her hair a mess. “Were you following us?”

Adrian looked me over with open contempt. “You made such a performance out of getting those papers signed, yet here you are tracking me to a hotel.”

Vanessa’s eyes reddened. She raised her hand to strike me again.

“First you moved into the home that belonged to Adrian and me. Now you follow us to a hotel room. Do you have no shame?”

This time, I caught her wrist.

“You’ve got it wrong, Ms. Hale. I’m delivering your order.”

I pulled a box of lube from the delivery bag and tossed it at Adrian.

“Wow, Mr. Blackwood. You two sure know how to spice things up.”

I kept my tone mocking, hiding the faint ache in my chest.

“What, the estate wasn’t enough? You had to get a hotel room for this?”

His face tightened. “You…”

I stepped back before he could finish. “Your order has been delivered. A five-star rating would be appreciated.”

I shut the door and walked away.

I had barely reached the lobby when Adrian’s security guards grabbed me. They covered my mouth, dragged me into the elevator, and threw me back into the suite.

A used condom struck my cheek.

Nausea surged through me. Adrian seized my chin and forced my face up.

“You have some nerve,” he said. “If you wanted to pretend you didn’t care, you should’ve done a better job. Why did you put adhesive in the lube?”

His fingers dug harder into my jaw.

“If I hadn’t noticed in time, you could have seriously hurt Vanessa.”
