My Godfather Husband Gave Our Marriage a Zero, but Refused to Let Me Divorce Him Chapter 02

Livia finished her last bite of foie gras and shifted straight back to business.

“Don’t forget to split tonight’s dinner bill. Total comes to three hundred and forty dollars.”

Rocco pulled out his phone and sent me the invoice.

I stared at it in shock. “You’re actually charging me for this?”

“One hundred thirty for the foie gras with cherry sauce, two hundred for the steak, five bucks for the potatoes. That makes three-forty,” Livia confirmed.

“I didn’t take a single bite of the foie gras or steak…”

“Quit it.” Rocco frowned, irritation thick in his voice. “Don’t haggle over every little thing with Livia. She’s our guest.”

Livia sighed dramatically. “Fine, I’ll cover this meal.”

“But remember not to get greedy. Don’t treat Rocco like your personal ATM.”

She transferred the money to Rocco, only for him to send it right back.

Rocco gave a wry chuckle. “I can’t take your money for a trivial dinner, Livia. What kind of man would that make me?”

Livia didn’t press the issue. She turned back toward me.

“Rocco cooked, so it falls on you to wash the dishes.”

I glanced down at my hands.

I’d fallen hard that morning. Both palms were scraped raw and wrapped in gauze.

But Rocco’s eyes held no trace of sympathy. “It’s not that bad. Stop playing the martyr. Wash them. That’s what fairness looks like.”

A bitter laugh caught in my throat.

Fairness?

During the years Rocco fought tooth and nail to climb the ranks, I never let him lift a finger around the house. I never spent a cent of his money.

I poured everything I had into him. And this was my reward.

We had a full staff of butlers, chefs, and maids, yet I was expected to scrub the plates myself.

I left the dirty dishes stacked in the kitchen and walked straight to our bedroom.

Early the next morning, I made up my mind. I was going to tell Rocco I was ending the pregnancy and walking away from our life together.

“Rocco, I need to talk to you about the baby.”

Rocco crossed his arms and let out a mocking snort. “Livia called it. The second your black card got cut, you started using the baby as leverage against me.”

Livia shook her head beside him. “She knows she brings nothing to the table besides the ability to bear children.”

She fixed her gaze on me, her tone patronizing. “Think twice before you weaponize this pregnancy. Plenty of women would line up to have Rocco’s kid. If you won’t do it, someone else will.”

I stared at Rocco, his face hard and distant, and my anger boiled over.

“Do you honestly believe that too? Have you forgotten everything I went through trying to have this baby?”

Five years earlier, I’d gotten pregnant unexpectedly.

Back then, Rocco was still a low-ranking member of the family, risking his life every day. He’d crossed the Don by covering up the underboss’s secrets.

The Don came down hard on him, and I got dragged into the mess. I lost that baby and suffered severe physical trauma. Doctors warned me how difficult it would be to conceive ever again.

The old underboss seized power and became the new don, and Rocco rose through the ranks to take his place. Our fortunes finally turned around.

Desperate to give Rocco a child, I went through round after round of ovulation shots.

The day we found out I was pregnant again, Rocco held me and cried like a little boy. He’d pull out the ultrasound photo in the middle of the night and stare at it for hours.

For a split second, Rocco looked like he remembered all of it. He seemed about to speak.

Livia cut him off, brushing the whole thing aside.

“That was just your poor health. Don’t unload all that guilt onto Rocco. Since we’re on the topic of fertility treatments, we should settle those bills too. Rocco, I’ll forward the charges to her.”

I opened the message on my phone. Line after line of cold numbers stared back at me: more than a hundred ovulation injections, over sixty prescriptions to heal my body, every prenatal test I’d undergone while pregnant.

All the hope and pain we’d poured into conceiving our child had been reduced to a twenty-seven-thousand-dollar invoice.
