Alexander opened his eyes a week later.

The familiar smell of antiseptic filled the room. His head felt like it was splitting apart, and his body felt like it had been run over by a truck

He tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through his legs, and his back was covered in cold sweat

After years as a surgeon, Alexander understood immediately.

He looked down. Then froze.

His lower legs had been amputated above the knees. There was nothing below them.

His mind went blank. The pain told him it was real.

The hospital room door opened.

“Alexander, you’re awake!”

Emily rushed to his bedside.

Her eyes were red. Tears still clung to her face.

“I’m so worried about you. Thank God you’re awake. Does anything hurt?”

She reached for his hand. He pulled away.

“Why?” His voice was hoarse. “Why did you push me?”

If Emily hadn’t pushed him, he might have avoided the truck.

None of this might have happened.

Emily froze. Guilt flashed through her eyes. It disappeared almost immediately.

She looked up with tears filling her eyes.

“Alexander, I was terrified. I didn’t know what I was doing. By the time I realized what had happened, you were already…”

“I’m sorry. Hit me if you want. I’ll do anything if you’ll forgive me.”

She grabbed his hand and tried to bring it toward her face.

Just before his palm touched her cheek, Alexander stopped.

He stared at her tearful eyes. After a long silence, he sighed.

“Forget it. I don’t blame you. Go outside. I need to be alone.”

After all, anyone could have panicked in that situation.

But one person immediately came to mind.

Sophia.

When they had first started dating, a patient’s family member had attacked him with a knife after

refusing to accept a death.

Everyone around him screamed and ran.

Only Sophia had moved against the crowd.

She had stood in front of him without hesitation.

Fortunately, security arrived in time and subdued the attacker.

Everyone survived.

Later, Alexander had asked Sophia if she wasn’t afraid.

He could still remember her smiling face.

“Of course I was. But I was more afraid you’d get hurt.”

If Sophia had been beside him that day, would everything have been different?

Alexander finally asked:

“Where is Sophia? After what happened to me, she must be terrified.”

Emily hesitated.

“She hasn’t come to the hospital once. Maybe she’s still angry.”

Alexander frowned.

That was impossible.

Sophia loved him too much.

Even if she was angry, how could she refuse to see him after an injury this serious?

A strange panic grew inside him.

He reached for his phone. Emily immediately said:

“Your phone was damaged. Use mine.”

Alexander took it without suspicion. He called Sophia. A cold automated message answered. Then

he remembered.

He had ordered someone to remove her SIM card because he was afraid she’d spread information about Emily’s surgical error.

Regret rose inside him.

Emily noticed.

Jealousy flashed through her eyes.

“Alexander, you’re still injured. You can’t leave yet.”

“I’ll apologize to Sophia for you. This was all my fault.”

In the past, her tears would have softened him.

Now they only made him strangely irritated.

He waved her off. “No.”

“I’ll apologize to Sophia myself after I’m discharged.”

For the next few days, Emily stayed at the hospital and took care of him.

Yet Alexander couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.

Because of his injuries, he rarely left his room. Sometimes people passing the door would point at him and whisper.

It almost felt as if he wasn’t a doctor who had saved thousands of lives.

It felt as if he were some terrible criminal.

The next second,, he immediately dismissed the thought.

He had saved countless patients over the years.

One day, his wound became infected.

Alexander gritted his teeth and removed the bandages.

The injury underneath was raw and bloody.

“Emily, help me change the dressing.”

Emily hesitated.

She picked up the medication.

But the moment she saw his wound, she covered her mouth and rushed outside.

Alexander assumed she was overwhelmed by seeing him hurt.

He followed in his wheelchair.

The hospital corridors were strangely empty.

He stopped outside the restroom.

He was about to comfort her when he heard Emily crying.

“Mom! I can’t take this anymore! You have no idea how disgusting Alexander is now!”

“I’m basically his nurse. I take care of him all day. He’s useless. He can’t do anything. Why didn’t that man just die in the crash?”

Alexander froze. His ears rang.

For days, Emily had acted gentle and caring in front of him.

He couldn’t understand why she would stay if she hated him so much.

Then her mother’s voice came through the door.

“If he died, who would take the blame for you?”
