The Only Family I Ever Had Chapter 10

The Only Family I Ever Had Chapter 10

Sebastian froze.

His lips parted.

No sound came out.

I watched the color drain from his face.

“I’m sick,” I explained carefully. “My memory has gotten really bad. There are a lot of things I

don’t remember.”,

His eyes filled so quickly he had to look away.

He took several breaths before finally speaking.

“I’m Sebastian.”

His voice was raw.

“Your uncle.”

“My uncle?”

My notes said I had an uncle named Sebastian, someone important.

Sebastian braced one hand against the wall and walked toward me.

His steps looked unsteady.

“Don’t be scared.”

His hand trembled as he gently touched my hair.

“I’ll take you to Dr. Williams, okay?”

I nodded.

“Okay. He said Evan was coming to pick me up.”

Sebastian looked away for a moment.

“Okay.”

At the hospital, Dr. Williams spoke to him privately.

“Claire is experiencing intermittent memory loss related to the brain metastases. She may still remember fragments from time to time, but as the disease progresses, the episodes can become

more frequent and more severe.”

He paused.

“If the metastases continue to damage the areas involved in memory, some of those deficits may become permanent. Even if treatment controls the tumors, we can’t promise that every lost

memory will return.”

Sebastian felt as though something had closed around his chest.

He had never imagined Claire could forget him entirely.

Evan stood nearby, watching through the glass as I followed the medical staff’s instructions inside

the exam room.

Dr. Williams placed a hand on Sebastian’s shoulder.

His voice softened.

“For patients, losing control of their own memory can be terrifying. Sometimes it’s harder on them

than it is on the family.”

Sebastian closed his eyes.

A long time passed before he spoke.

“I respect her decision.”

His voice shook.

“I’ll support the treatment.”

On the morning of treatment, Sebastian held my hand until the last possible moment.

“Don’t be afraid, Claire.”

His grip tightened.

“Think of it as going to sleep for a while. I’ll be right outside when you wake up.’

Seeing how terrified he looked, I almost wanted to comfort him.

“I’m the one getting treated. Why do you look more scared than I do?”

“I’m not.”

His voice broke slightly.

“You’re going to come out of there safely.”

After everyone said goodbye, the doors closed.

Sebastian turned to Ryan.

“How long?”

Ryan checked the schedule.

“Four to five hours.”

Sebastian swallowed.

Then he said, “Find me a church.”

He went to a small chapel nearby.

He lit a candle and prayed.

It was the same thing he had done every day since arriving.

He asked for only one thing.

For Claire to live.

That was enough.

Even if she forgot him forever.

As long as she lived, there would still be hope.

. He would have traded anything he owned for that.

Even his own life.

Sebastian lowered his head in prayer.

When he finally left the chapel to return to the medical center, he kept a small cross clenched in his

hand.

He was still praying silently when a car veered head-on into their lane.

Ryan jerked the wheel.

They avoided the first impact.

Then another vehicle slammed into them from behind.

The force knocked both men unconscious.

Several people climbed out of the other vehicles.

They were carrying metal clubs.

They surrounded Sebastian’s car and began smashing the windows.
